Hacettepe University, Institute of Health Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics - Philosophy of Doctorate programme has been reorganized, the content of courses has been altered and courses have been introduced with new codes as part of the Bologna accreditation process. Before these arrangements have been done the opinions of our graduates and students, Turkish Dietetic Association and departments of Nutrition and Dietetics of other universities have been considered and a requirement analysis has been done. It has been considered that the novel applications which meet the programme requirements will provide a different perspective to our students. The opportunity of more elective courses has been introduced according to student?s area of interests. These studies have been carried out through partners and students opinions as well as considering the basic field requirements.
Hacettepe University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is the first occupational training institution at university level in Turkey. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics started to serve as a program called ?Dietetics? under Health Sciences School firstly in 1962, in order to give education and do research in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. When Hacettepe School of Health Sciences became Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1963 the program of Dietetics reorganized and became a part of the Faculty?s Fundamental Sciences School. The program continued to proceed under Faculty of Health Sciences after the establishment of Hacettepe University on 8th July 1967. It was structured within the School of Home Economics for a while and then engaged to the School of Health Technology with the Department of Food Analysis and Technologies and Institute of Food and Nutrition Sciences in 1976. After the Department of Food Analysis and Technologies engaged to Faculty of Engineering, as Food Engineering in 1977, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics continued to proceed educational and research facilities under School of Health Technology as a unique department.
There are four major field of studies in Department of Nutrition and Dietetics which are Nutritional Sciences (1994), Dietetics (1994), Institutional Food Service Systems (1994) and Community Nutrition (2001). ?Nutrition and Dietetics Programme? is the only Philosophy of Doctorate programme of the department and has been proceeding under the Institute of Health Sciences of the university. The language of this programme is Turkish. To date 79 individuals have graduated from Nutrition and Dietetics Philosophy of Doctorate programme. It is well known that laboratory equipments are essential for research facilities in Philosophy of Doctorate programmes. The training programme of Philosophy of Doctorate degree is arranged by the supervisor depending on the teaching programme of supervisor or the situation of students. It is essential to complete the obligatory courses firstly which should not be lower than 120 ECTS credits. After completing the educational period of the degree successfully, students enter a scientific proficiency exam and in the case of being successful a research proposal is submitted. When the submission is accepted students can initiate the research period of the degree on an appropriate subject which should be approved by the Thesis Monitoring Committee. Students who complete the research period satisfactorily and pass the viva exam successfully have the right of graduation.
Examinations, evaluations and marking are regulated according to the Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences, Higher Degree Education and Examination Guide. The detailed quantification and evaluation procedures are described in Course Description section.
Students who completed the Master of Science degree are accepted to the Philosophy of Doctorate degree although in some cases this situation may depend on preference.
The recognition of prior formal education in Turkish Higher Education institutions are carried out within the context of ?Regulation on transition between associate degree and graduate programmes, double major, sub-branch and credit transfer between institutions? determined by the Council of Higher Education (http://www.yok.gov.tr/content/view/476/).
Nutrition and Dietetics is the only Philosophy of Doctorate programme which offers education, implementation and research facilities. The main objectives of the programme are to protect, improve and develop public health lifelong and give training, conduct research and support an academical perspective in the fields of dietetics, institutional food management systems and nutritional sciences.

In accordance with high level academical objectives implementation and research facilities have been carried out in related subjects.
Students who have completed the Nutrition and Dietetics Doctorate Program can academically work at a university as a doctoral lecturer or if they meet the relevant criteria.
This doctorate program consists of 8 semesters. Program consists of at least 240 ECTS; at least 30 course ECTS credits in the each of the first 4 semesters and total 120 ECTS credits in the last 4 thesis semesters.
Students have to complete the must courses in the first two years (four semesters). The required credit is provided by elective courses. Students may also take courses from other programs not included in the to contribute to their areas of interest and thesis studies. A student who has completed at least 120 ECTS credits, can also take extra elective courses in accordance with the approval of his/her advisor
