D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures was established in 2012 within the Faculty of Letters of Hacettepe University. It began education with the Master?s Degree Program (with thesis) in the 2012-2013 Academic Year. 


The aim of the PhD program is to create a high-level academic education environment in cooperation with the departments of Turkish Language and Literature, Turkish Language and Literature Education, Turcology, Turkish Education, Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures in Turkey and abroad, and to train academics who are open to innovation.


The courses in the PhD program define and analyze the Modern Turkic languages and literatures all its diversity and depth. The courses in the program focus on the historical, lexicological, etymological, morphological, syntactical, semantical and aspects of the Turkic languages. One of the goals of this programme is to educate teachers, experts and scientists in the field of Turkic languages and literatures.


The program develops students' skills in researching, evaluating and interpreting information for the purpose of conducting scientific research. With its interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective, the department raises scholars who are also able to critically evaluate works of literature.


The language of the education program is Turkish.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. The applicants who apply to the PhD program must have one of the master's degrees:

Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures, Turkish Language, Modern Turkish Literature, Linguistics, Turkish Studies Master?s program.



2. The applicants must have an ALES equally weighted score that meet the minimum score of 60, or in accordance with the equivalence defined by the Senate of Hacettepe University must have an internationally recognized GRE or GMAT score, which is equivalent to 60 in ALES.


3. The applicants must have YDS scores that meet the minimum score of 60 or must have scores equivalent to 60 on the tests that are recognized on national and international levels, and the equivalence of which is approved by ÖSYM.


4. International students' applications are accepted in line within ?Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).


5. Those conditions, which are not included, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüstü Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

*Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures Doctorate Entrance Exam is done in two stages, written and oral. The weight of the written exam is 40% and the weight of the oral exam is 60%. Students who score less than 60 points in the written exam are not allowed to take the oral exam.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The requirements for the Ph.D. program in the field of Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures are taking courses, passing the proficiency exam, writing a dissertation, and presenting a successful thesis defense. Students are required to take a minimum of 120 ECTS credits for coursework and a minimum of 120 ECTS credits for the Ph. D. dissertation (240 ECTS credits in sum) in order to graduate. Students who pass each of their courses and have a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 are eligible to take the Ph.D. proficiency exam. The students who successfully pass the exam are then eligible to work on their dissertations under the guidance of the dissertation committee and present it to the jury. 

Students who meet the conditions of graduation indicated in the Hacettepe University Regulations for Graduate Program earn a right to graduate from this program.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who earn the right to enroll in the doctorate program in the Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures can be exempt from certain courses within the scope of related rules and regulations. If the content of a course taken at another university matches a given course at Hacettepe University and is accepted by the educational board, the student can be exempted from that course.


Students, who have studied at Hacettepe University or at other institutions of higher education for at least one year, can apply for a transfer to the doctorate program of Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures. To be accepted, applicants must meet the terms of acceptance and pass each of the master's courses they have taken for at least one semester. The admission and legal procedures of students who are found eligible by the department for the transfer are fulfilled after the decision of the institute council.

The courses in the program focus on the historical, lexicological, etymological, morphological, syntactical, semantical aspects of the Modern Turkic languages. One of the goals of this programme is to educate teachers, experts and scientists in the field of Turkic languages and literatures.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Back

Career opportunities for the graduates of the Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures are quite diverse. While some of our graduates work as teachers and lecturers or research assistants in related departments of private and state universities, others work at ministries, at national and international institutions and companies, at visual and print media institutions, at publishing houses and news agencies.

The Ph.D. program of the Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures consists of 240 ECTS credits: A minimum of 120 ECTS credits for coursework and a minimum of 120 ECTS credits for the dissertation


Students who have a minimum GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 are eligible to take the PhD. proficiency exam. Those who pass the exam present their dissertation proposal. Students whose proposals are accepted begin working on their dissertations under the guidance of their dissertation committees

Regarding exams and course grades, the related provisions of Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations are applied.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to successfully complete the program, students must take and pass all the required courses in their program and earn a minimum of 120 ECTS credits (24 national credits) for coursework and thesis work.

Students who meet the conditions of graduation indicated in the Hacettepe University Regulations for Graduate Program earn a right to graduate from this program.
