D.1. General Information about Program

The Master's Degree in English Translation and Interpreting, which aims to train future translators and interpreters in accordance with contemporary translation theories and principles, has two main objectives. The first is to improve the professional knowledge and skills of those who will work as translators and interpreters in public and private institutions or who are currently working as translators and interpreters in these institutions, in line with contemporary conditions. The second aim is to contribute to the production of theoretical knowledge and to provide a basis for the PhD programme to be carried out in the Department.

The Department's Master's programme is conducted in English and new courses are added to the programme in parallel with developments in science and the needs of society.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. Applicants who apply to the program must have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with an average of at least 3.00 (two point eighty) over 4.00 (four).

2. Applicants are required to score at least 65 standard points from either one of the verbal or equal weight categories of the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Examination (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimine Giriş Sınavı, ALES) organized by Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (Ölçme, Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi, ÖSYM). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score, determined by the Hacettepe University Senate, in the internationally recognized GRE and GMAT examinations.

3. Applicants are required to score at least 85 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabancı Dil Seviye Tespit Sınavı, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ÖSYM.

4. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

5. Those conditions, which are not included below, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüst Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

The students who successfully complete their studies receive an M.A. degree. It is required to satisfy the necessary conditions indicated in Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; complete 27 national credits (120 ECTS) of the departmental courses.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

For undergraduate transfers to the M.A. programme and for inter-institutional credit transfers, the regulations of Council of Higher Education of Turkey, HU Associate Degree, Undergraduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations, and the criteria specified by the Senate of Hacettepe University apply. D.7. Goals and Objectives

The major aim of the program is to raise expert translators who can apply the basic knowledge and skills that s/he gained on academic and professional grounds, can specify a domain-specific or an interdisciplinary problem, can develop strategies in order to solve that problem, can produce projects, can take responsibility and the leadership in teamwork, can attend scientific meetings actively, has respect for ethical values, questions and thinks critically.

In addition to academic positions, job opportunities for our graduates are available in the European Union and foreign relations departments of related ministries, tourism field, banks, state or private sector, and the media. They can also work as writers and/or editors at publishing houses.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

English Translation and Interpretation M.A. Programme is a 2 year programme. In order to graduate, students should complete departmental courses equivalent to 27 national credits (120 ECTS) in total.

All M.A. courses are one-semester courses, which may be offered any semester. There are no courses with pre-requisites in the M.A. programme.

The departmental M.A. courses are theoretical and practical. Each student who has completed his/her courses succesfully must complete his/her thesis.

Assessment and evaluation methods applied in each course are defined in the “Assessment Methods” sections of the course information packets. The relevant articles of HU Graduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations apply.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from Hacettepe University English Translation and Interpretation M.A. Programme, students are required to comply with the Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; complete at least 27 national credits (120 ECTS) of the departmental courses. The process of writing thesis is included in this period.
