D.1. General Information about Program

The graduate programs of the Sociology department have been carried out since the 1967-1968 academic year. The graduate program aims to train individuals who can use the detailed and analytical information on basic theoretical and procedural matters and issues of sociology, who has the ability to carry out research that triggers independent, original, and further expansions on sociology's current problems, who can develop political suggestions to solve social matters, who can take over social and ethical responsibility in order to further scientific knowledge and understanding, provide human welfare and social development.

Since the beginning, an interdisciplinary approach has been adopted both in education and in research and has become an example to future establishments of other sociology graduate programs in Turkey.

The medium of instruction is Turkish and it is necessary to be competent in a foreign language to be able to follow related sources.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. Applicants who apply to the program must have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with an average of at least 2.40 over 4.00 (four).

2. Candidates must receive minimum 60 standard score in one of the verbal or equally-weighted scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) which has been done by Evaluation, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) or international exams such as GRE and GMAT whose equivalence are approved by the Hacettepe University Senate.

3. Applicants are required to score at least 60 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabancı Dil Seviye Tespit Sınavı, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ÖSYM.

4. International students' applications are accepted in line within ?Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

5. With the suggestion of the admission committee of the department, the applicants may be required to attend one-year preparatory program or take some courses from bachelor's, preparatory or graduate programs.

6. Those conditions, which are not included, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüst Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

7. If the students who were successful in the program entrance exam but completed their undergraduate or graduate degree in a field other than sociology and the students who completed their education in the field of sociology but need to develop or support their academic background, with the recommendation of the interview jury and the approval of the head of the department 1 year scientific preparation is applied.

The Sociology Master's Entrance Exam is held in two stages, written and oral. The weight of the written exam grade is calculated as 40% and the weight of the oral exam grade is calculated as 60%. Students who score less than 40 points in the written exam are not taken to the oral exam.


D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The graduate program is a composite structure that combines courses and thesis studies. Except for SOC 603 Seminar on Sociology, SOC 611 Methodology I, and SOC 612 Methodology II , all other courses provided within the program are elective. Of the total 120 ECTS, 40% consists of compulsory and 60% elective courses. 1 ECTS= 25 hours. Students are required to take over at least 21 credits (60 ECTS) of courses and succeed them with an average academic score of at least 2.5 out of 4.00. Those that fail their courses or cannot reach the necessary minimum average academic score are given an additional academic year to improve their academic success.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Alumni that have met the requirements of the application to the Sociology Graduate Program and have been found successful at the program entrance exam may enrol to the program. However, all students that have gained their bachelor's degree from another field than Sociology and some students, who have gained their bachelor's degree from Sociology but were decided to be in need of developing or improving their academic knowledge are to attend the Scientific Preparatory Program of Hacettepe University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Sociology's graduate program according to the interview jury's suggestion and the approval of the director of the program.

Sociologists have a wide choice of employment; they can work in technical services or in different positions of public or private institutions and organizations with a sociologist title. Sociologists can also work in the following institutions: The ministries' central organizations, Ministry of Family and Social Politics, Provincial Directorates of Agriculture, General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, General Directorate of Civil Archives, Housing Development Administration of Turkey, General Directorate of Civil Defence, Secretariat of Atatürk Research and Education Centre, General Directorate of Security Affairs, General Directorate of Press and Information, General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, South-eastern Anatolia Project Regional Development Administration, Turkish Social Services and Child Protection Institution, Radio and Television Supreme Council, Turkey Statistics Institute, State Planning Organization, Presidency of Religious Affairs, municipalities, chambers of commerce and industry, nursing homes for older people, printed-visual media outlets, research companies, advertisement agencies, publishers, banks, human resources of private companies, and international organizations (such as UN, ILO, EU).

Specified Graduation Requirements

Students are required to take over at least 21 credits (60 ECTS) of courses from the program's courses in Sociology, which is a non-credit course, and to succeed the chosen courses with an average academic score of at least 2.5 out of 4.00. As mentioned in the previous item, students who have successfully completed their courses are to write an original master's thesis and defend it in front of a jury that will decide by the majority of their votes.
