D.1. General Information about Program


Graduates of this program are the most important source of both meeting the country's need for social workers and training the lecturers needed by newly opened social work programs. The main objective of the Master's Program in Social Work is to train social workers who have reached the level of sufficient knowledge and skills in the field of social work, who are open to development in the field, who can communicate with the people they work with, who take active roles in solving social problems and who have adopted the principle of adherence to ethical rules by providing contemporary and universal social work education. The program language is Turkish. Program quota is determined and announced by the department each semester. There is no internship in the program, application requirements are provided in the field with the application course.

A student who graduates from the program is expected to gain qualifications that will work with an approach that adopts national and universal values by giving priority to the needs of the country, provide psycho-social improvement and social organization, and reveal the power of social institutions and social policies.

In 1965, the Academy was accepted as a member of the International Association of Schools of Social Work after its program was approved to meet the standards. In 1982, with the Law on Higher Education Institutions, the Academy of Social Services was affiliated to Hacettepe University under the name of the School of Social Services by joining the Department of Social Work and Social Services, which was established within the Faculty of Administrative and Social Sciences of Hacettepe University in 1967. As of April 2006, it was included in Hacettepe University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences as ?Department of Social Work?. In July 2010, it moved to its new building in Beytepe campus. Our department has been the only department in our country that provides undergraduate and graduate social work education for a long time. The aim of the department is to train social workers who have knowledge and skills about the country's basic social structure, problems and social work methodology, who will participate in social policy and planning, and who will work as planners, organizers, managers, researchers and practitioners in social services at various levels (public, local, non-governmental organizations).

D.4. Provisions for Registration


1. Applicants who apply to the program must have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with an average of at least 2.50 over 4.00 (four).

2. Applicants are required to score at least 60 standard points from equal weight categories of the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Examination (Akademik Personel ve Lisans├╝st├╝ E─čitimine Giri┼č S─▒nav─▒, ALES) organized by Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (├ľl├žme, Se├žme ve Yerle┼čtirme Merkezi, ├ľSYM). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score, determined by the Hacettepe University Senate, in the internationally recognized GRE and GMAT examinations.

3. Applicants are required to score at least 60 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabanc─▒ Dil Seviye Tespit S─▒nav─▒, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ├ľSYM.

4. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

5. Graduate students with an undergraduate degree other than social work are given scientific preparation courses by the decision of the jury.

6. Those conditions, which are not included, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe ├ťniversitesi Lisans├╝st E─čitim, ├ľ─čretim ve S─▒nav Y├Ânetmeli─či).

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations


1. Students obtain masters degree by taking 24 compulsory credits (16 domestic - 104 ECTS credits) and elective (8 domestic - 16 ECTS credits), completing theoretical courses and trainings and successfully carrying out a master's thesis under an academic supervisor.

2. In this two year program, first year is dedicated to the theoretical courses and second year to thesis.

3. Students who do not have a social work bachelor's degree can be asked to take 2-12 additional courses as part of preparatory class.

4. Along with Social Work graduates, graduates from related fields (psychology, Sociology and Philosophy etc.) can also apply to the Social Work Master's Program.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning


The students must have completed Turkish secondary education or the equivalent abroad. Undergraduate transfer students must fulfill the requirements mentioned below:


D.7. Goals and Objectives


 The objective of the master's program is to train social workers for a range of leadership and advanced practice roles on one of the fields of family welfare, child and youth welfare or health settings of social work. While students will be prepared to practice at specific intervention levels, and with specialized skills, all will be thoroughly grounded in knowledge of psychosocial development, social welfare policies, and social work organizations.

The student takes 16 national credits (44 ECTS) of compulsory courses and 12 national credits (16 ECTS) of elective courses.

In this case; in the first semester the student takes 8 national credits of three compulsory courses (22 ECTS) with 6 national credits of (8 ECTS) elective courses and in the second semester the student takes 8 national credits of three compulsory courses (22 ECTS) with 6 national credits of (8 ECTS) elective courses.

In order to take SHO 600 Special Courses, the student must have taken 24 national credits (60 ECTS) of courses.

The percentage of compulsory courses (minimum) 44ECTS (73%)

D.16. Graduation Requirements


The students who complete totally 24 credit hours by taking requisite and elective courses offered by the program and by doing practice, and also who prepare master's thesis under the supervision of a supervisor and are successful at the thesis oral exam, are eligible to get master of social work diploma.
