D.1. General Information about Program


The Department of Philosophy was founded in 1969. It covers a wide range of fields in the history of philosophy and offers programmes in undergraduate and graduate levels. There are elective courses for students from other departments, especially for students from the Department of Sociology and of Psychology who want to pursue a career as a high-school teacher. The language of education is Turkish. Besides, the department has Erasmus and Farabi agreements with several universities. In addition, the department offers minor degree programs in various fields provided that the student meets the criteria.

Since 2007, the Department of Philosophy organizes symposiums concerning distinguished philosophers in every semester, and it has Bilge Karasu Library with approximately 4000 books on literature and philosophy.

D.4. Provisions for Registration


1. Candidates must have Master's Degree from any programme

2. Candidates must receive minimum 60 standard score in one of the verbal or equally-weighted scores from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) which has been done by Evaluation, Selection and Placement Centre (├ľSYM) or international exams such as GRE and GMAT whose equivalence are approved by the Hacettepe University Senate.

3. Candidates must receive minimum 70 score from Foreign Language Exam (YDS, Y├ľKD─░L) or from one of the international or national exams whose equivalence and validity are approved by ├ľSYM.

4. If it is required candidates are supposed to take Scientific Preparation courses which are determined by Department.

5. International students' applications are accepted in line within Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

Candidates who meet the above application requirements are taken to the program entrance exam. Candidates who get the minimum score determined by the department in the written and/or interview examination are considered successful. The ranking of successful candidates is made by the overall success grade.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations


In order to graduate from the department, students have to take the must and elective courses with total amount of 240 ECTS.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning


The recognition of the courses which belong to students' prior learning is organized through Hacettepe University graduate education regulations. (In Turkish only).

Exchange students must take into account that their courses are recognized only if there is a similar course in their home university and providing that the instructor and the head of the department approve the recognition.

D.7. Goals and Objectives


The purpose of the program is to train professionals who can make prestigious researches, work in academic and research institutes in national and international area, and provide positive contributions to science and humanity by its education and researches that provide to be borne in upon of necessity of philosophical knowledge in directing both personal and social life and research in various fields of knowledge.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples


Our graduates find position in university departments of philosophy, in private and public educational institutions, in related units of various ministries, in media including TRT, and in the units of education, culture, human relations, planning and assessment of various private and public corporations.

D.14. Profile of the Programme


Programme consists of lectures and Ph.D. Thesis in total 240 ECTS*. It is mostly an academic programme, the first three semester students must have take the must and compulsory courses, which are consist of 90 ECTS. After getting success on these courses, students take the Preparation to Doctoral Proficiency which is 30 ECTS. Students which are succeed in proficiency exam, prepares the Ph.D. Thesis with their advisors for two years (120 ECTS). After defending the Ph.D. Thesis successfully, the students have the Ph.D. degree in Philosophy.

* 1 ECTS corresponds to 30 workload.

D.16. Graduation Requirements


In order to graduate from the department, students have to take (totally 240 ECTS) the must and elective courses with total amount of 120 ECTS and must write a Ph.D. Thesis (120 ECTS) and defend it.
