D.1. General Information about Program


The main purpose of the Department of German Language and Literature is to develop teaching programs to provide trained manpower at the graduate level in the fields of German Literature and German Linguistics and applied linguistics and foreign language teaching based on this, and to teach in accordance with Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations.

Department of German Language and Literature; To conduct research within the framework of linguistics and literary science in the fields of languages, literatures and cultures of German-speaking countries, to develop German teaching methods and to train experts on these subjects, to meet our country's need for qualified personnel in both scientific study and application fields; In order to produce solutions that would enable these societies to understand each other better by researching the language and cultural characteristics of German-speaking countries, Prof. Dr. It was founded by Ya┼čar ├ľNEN.

There is no internship requirement in our department.

D.4. Provisions for Registration


1. Graduated from a Master's Degree Program with an academic grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00 out of 4 or equivalent;

2. Have a minimum standard score of 60 in one of the numerical, verbal or equal weight score types of the Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) conducted by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (├ľSYM), or a score equivalent to 60 points from the internationally recognized GRE and GMAT exams within the framework of equivalence determined by the H.├ť. Senate,

3. The candidate must have a minimum score of 80 from the Foreign Language Proficiency Level Examination (YDS) or an equivalent score of 80 from one of the nationally or internationally recognized German exams accepted as equivalent by ├ľSYM.

4. If deemed necessary, the candidate is subjected to a 1-year Scientific Preparatory Program.

5. International student applications are accepted in accordance with Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations published in the Official Gazette dated November 26, 2016 and numbered 29900.

Candidates who meet the above application requirements are admitted to the program entrance exam. Candidates who get the minimum score determined by the department in the written and / or interview exam evaluation are considered successful. The ranking of successful candidates is made by the exam jury according to the overall success grade.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations


Students studying in the doctoral program,

Candidates with a Master's degree are required to enroll in at least 7 courses (21 local credits) and Qualifying Examination and Doctoral Thesis and complete 240 ECTS credits. (Courses in the curriculum that do not have local credits and Doctoral Thesis are evaluated as Pass/Fail).

In order to be successful in a course in their program, they must have a minimum grade of B3.

Students are required to have a GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 in all courses in their programs and to be successful in the Qualifying Examination and Doctoral Dissertation Defense of the non-credit courses in the curriculum.

They are obliged to fulfill all the requirements of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning


Students who transfer from one of the institutes affiliated to another university to an institute of the University from programs that are similar in quality and whose equivalence is approved by the relevant board may be exempted from the courses they have taken and succeeded in equivalent programs with the evaluation of the relevant board. Students who apply to the program from outside the field are accepted to the scientific preparation program for a maximum of two semesters in order to eliminate the deficiencies related to the program with the decision of the institute board of directors upon the recommendation of the interview evaluation jury and the positive opinion of the head of the relevant department.

D.7. Goals and Objectives


 To provide the student with the ability to conduct independent research, to interpret scientific events by examining them from a broad, deep and rational point of view and to determine the necessary steps to reach new syntheses. The thesis to be prepared at the end of the doctoral study must fulfill one of the qualifications of bringing innovation to science, developing a new scientific method, applying a known method to a new field.

Graduates also gain the skills to discuss their scientific research in written and oral form in national and international environments and publications.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples


The program aims to train Literary and Linguistic Scholars and Linguists who have a high level of critical and creative thinking, who are open to discussion and innovation, and who can apply the knowledge they have acquired in the program. Graduates can work in various public and private institutions, especially in the Ministries of Tourism, Culture and Foreign Affairs; they can work in banking, media, foreign trade and tourism sectors. Our graduates, who have job opportunities in German or other fields related to Germany, can work as German instructors in our universities, and those who have a teaching certificate can work as teachers in public and private schools.

The PhD Program in question is organized as 240 ECTS. It consists of 16 elective courses, 4 compulsory courses, a Qualifying Exam Preparation course coded ADE 800 and a doctoral thesis.

D.16. Graduation Requirements


1. German Linguistics PhD program consists of a course period, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, thesis study and thesis defense exam. Doctoral students must successfully complete a total course load of at least 24 credits from the courses offered for the relevant program and the courses offered for other programs in a maximum of four semesters. In case of necessity, fall semester courses can be offered in the spring semester and spring semester courses can be offered in the fall semester.

2. Students who have successfully completed their doctoral courses are admitted to the doctoral qualifying exam when they certify that they are successful in the Interuniversity Board Foreign Language Examination (├ťDS) or the Public Personnel Foreign Language Level Determination (KPDS) exam. The doctoral qualifying exam aims to test whether the student has comprehensive knowledge and synthesis power on the basic subjects in the field of science and on the subjects related to the doctoral study. Doctoral qualifying exams are held twice a year. Students take the doctoral qualifying exam in June-July or December-January following the semester in which they successfully complete their courses and KPDS or ├ťDS exam. The student who successfully completes the doctoral qualifying exam defends his/her "thesis proposal", which includes the purpose, method and work plan of the research to be conducted, orally in front of the thesis monitoring committee within 6 months at the latest from the date of the qualifying exam.

3. The student who successfully completes the courses, is successful in the qualifying exam and whose thesis proposal is accepted prepares a doctoral thesis that fulfills at least one of the following qualifications: bringing innovation to science, developing a new method, applying a known method to a new field.

4. The student whose thesis is accepted takes the thesis defense exam and those who are successful are awarded the degree of "Doctor of Science" in the field of German Language and Literature (by specifying "German Literature" or "German Linguistics") by the Board of Directors of the Institute of Social Sciences.
