D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Prosthodontic Dentistry was established in 1963 under “Prosthesis” name, and it was changed to “Department of Prosthetic Dentistry” afterwards. In 1966, first exam for assistantship was held. First doctorate programme in Postgraduational Education Faculty was opened in 1967 and the assistants education started. The school had its first graduates in 1968. The monoblock casting laboratory was opened in 1969. In 1976, all departments were founded and the academic staff started to expand. First intraosseosus alloplastic implants were inserted in 1791-72. This study was presented in 1. Ä°zmir International Dentistry Congress, 1972. In 1973, first closed reduction “splint theraphy” in jaw fractures and ear prostheses were made. To this date, educational and health service studies are carried on parallel with current developements. Between 1968 and 2013, 98 research assistants gained the title “Doctor of Prosthodontics”. Currently, there are 12 academic staff, 2 teaching assistants and 12 research assistants working in the department. 2 research assistants were accepted with Dentistry Speciality Examination for the first time in 2012 spring semester.

Programme distinctions: This programme teaches prosthetic and restorative dentistry applications within the framework of evidence based dentistry principles, the making of tooth and implant supported fixed and removable prostheses in theory and pratice. Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of TMD and maxillofacial defects are taught and practiced. General properties of dental materials are learned. Up-to-date developements are learned by seminars, case and journal paper reports.

Laoratories, clinics and technical facilities for students: There are a total of 7 working facilities; Clinic1, Clinic2, Cihat Çekiç Clinic, TMD and maxillofacial clinic, CAD/CAM laboratory, Ergun Aydınlık and Belger labotarories. There are 28 dental chairs. In Cihat Çekiç Clinic, there is an oral microscope and a video recorder for dental research purposes. A Spectroshade and a Cerec 3 scanner unit is also present in this clinic. In the CAD/CAM laboratory, Cerec 3 equipment, ceramic furnaces for all-ceramic crowns and IPS Empress II ceramic furnace are present. There are 70 phantom heads in Ergun Aydınlık Laboratory.

Admission Requirements

The applicants must have a graduate degree and meet foreign language requirements. Applicants who meet these criterion enter an oral exam which is held once in Fall and Spring semesters. The number of PhD students and the requirements are announced before every semester. In this announcement, the application requirements, application deadline, oral exam place and date are indicated. The applicants must also meet Health Sciences Institute's entrance requirements.

Admission Requirements for International Students

Diplomas from foreign universities must be accredited by YÖK and must meet Health Sciences Institute's entrance requirements.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Doctorate degree is given to students who complete all courses in the programme ( total of 240 ECTS) successfully and must have a grade point average of minimum 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, pass the comprehensive exam and give the thesis defence.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Accreditiation requirements by YÖK and Hacettepe University Health Sciences Institute must be fulfilled. The applicants must meet the requirements for recognition of prior learning, determined by Health Sciences Institute.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

To diagnose and plan treatment for partial and complete edentulous patients by using current knowledge and technologies within the framework of evidence based dentistry. To learn and practice clinical and laboratory procedures for tooth supported fixed partial dentures and removable partial dentures. To plan and perform applications of implant supported restorations and overdentures in partial and complete edentulous cases. To perform reconstruction and rehabilitation of maxillofacial defects. To make treatments using all-ceramic systems in light of advancements in esthetic dentistry. To learn methods of scientific research.

Dentists who qualified phD in Prosthodontics can continue their academic careers in Dentistry Schools, can work in state and private hostipals.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

This programme constitutes of 75% obligatory and 25% elective lectures in first three semesters. Elective lectures include in-department lectures that can be taken in the first three semesters. For the 4th semester, the programme includes the preparation studies for doctoral proficiency exam and the proficiency exam then after. At 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th semesters, thesis work and clinical practice in prosthodontics are carried out.

To successfully complete 240 ECTS of obligatory and elective phD lectures and to prepare a qualified thesis on his field based on “Postdoctorate Education Ordinance” and to prepare the thesis according to the guide and standards of Institute of Health Sciences.

To succeed in 8 semester, 240 ECTS theoretical and practical lectures and practice applications, to conduct a qualified thesis based on “Postdoctorate Education Ordinance” and to prepare the thesis according to the guide and standards of Institute of Health Sciences.
