Aim: Autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases are the backbone of rheumatic diseases. They are associated with signifcant morbidity and mortality. The autoimmune diseases include systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), juvenile scleroderma (JScl) and some vasculitides.
Autoinflammatory diseases are recently flourishing as an important disease group. Most are monogenic diseases. Among these diseases Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is the most common hereditary disease in our country. Other diseases in this group are the Hyper IgD syndrome (?HIDS?), TNF-receptor assocaited periodic fever syndrome (?TRAPS?), and the ?CIAS-pathy? (NOMID, MWS, FCU) syndromes. Recently some multifactorial diseases such as systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and Behcet?s disease are also classified in this group.
Understanding the pathogenesis of autoinflammatory diseases will shed light on the common mechanisms operative in inflammatory disorders. For example the molecular mechanism of Crohn disease, which is an inflammatory bowel disorder has been enlightened by these studies,
In the last five years our department has ranked first in the number of clinical investigations for FMF. However, we lack the basic and translational research in the field. The presented program will enable us to start and guide such studies in the field of autoinflammatory disorders.
Autoimmune diseases of childhood are also quite common in our country. Again this is an where research is required. In the presented program the student will acquire a thorough understanding of the aforementioned diseases and will be expected to complete a research project in one of these disease subjects. We require the nominees to be pediatricians. In the end of the program we also foresee the students to complete their education in the management and treatment of these diseases including FMF, JIA, Systemic lupus erythematosus and vasculitides.
