D.1. General Information about Program


Education and research take place in the lecture rooms and laboratories of the Department of Stem Cell Sciences localized at the Hacettepe University Center for Stem Cell Research and Development.

The education language is Turkish, but students with a foreign nationality can also be accepted.

In the Stem Cell Sciences PhD program, the candidates will obtain basic knowledge on stem cells and theoretic and technical training of equipment used in this field of application, they will have earned a critical point of view on `hot? research and ethical problems topics, they will earn the capability to develop an original and independent scientific way of thinking, which qualifies to scientists at an international level and they will be able to use their obtained data in the framework of scientific research,  they will be able to speak a common language in the field of stem cell researches that are close to each other, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, cloning and stem cell technologies, and it is planned that they will be trained to become scientists, able to create projects through national and international cooperation in this field and that they will gain experience on this topic.

D.4. Provisions for Registration


  • At application to the PhD program, they must fullfill the PhD training application requirements from the H.├ť. Institute of Health Sciences:
  • Medical Faculty, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of VeT─▒p Fak├╝ltesi, Di┼č Hekimli─či Fak├╝ltesi, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy (5 year graduates) or
  • MD/PhD program students or
  • Graduates from the faculties of applied sciences and engineering, who finished a Masters of Science degree in Basic Medical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering (Tissue engineering), Biophysics, Developmental Biology or Cytology Sciences or
  • They finished their Masters of Science degree in a branch distinct from the above, but worked in a Cell Research Laboratory for a period exceeding 6 months
To have ALES (SAY / EA) score type and ALES and Foreign Language base score determined by the Health Sciences Institute Board and approved by the Hacettepe University Senate

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations


The ECTS credits for the Stem Cell Sciences PhD program is 240. Students who succesfully finished all classes required to obtain a total of 90 ECTS credits within this program, will take the PhD proficiency test preparatory course in the fourth semester. Students who finish their classes with an average grade of at least 75 (2.50 out of 4.00) and finish their PhD proficiency test, have to prepare a thesis on a topic to be determined in cooperation with their thesis supervisor fort he remaining period of time and defend this doctoral thesis in front of a jury. The thesis phase consists of 4 half-years and the students will gain 120 ECTS during this phase. PhD students, successful at the defense of their thesis and who fullfill all H.├ť. Institute of Health Sciences PhD Education Graduation Requirements, will be given a PhD diploma.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning


According to regulations of the Hacettepe University PhD Education-Training and Examination Guide concerning the acceptance of students through lateral transfer and with the academic board approvement, a student may be accepted through lateral transfer.

D.7. Goals and Objectives


Within the Stem Cell Sciences PhD Program it is aimed that the students are educated to an international level within the field of stem cell sciences, that these students will gain experience regarding application and scientic research methods as well as reach a profound level of knowledge in the field of stem cells. It is planned that graduates will be able to develop a scientific hypothesis in their field, that they can question it, that they can present the results they obtained by using scientific methods that are used in the field of stem cells to the scientific world.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples


They will be able to isolate stem cells, expand them in the laboratory and characterize them at a cellular and molecular level, they will have gained experience on differentiation methods using stem cell in vitro manipulation, they will be able to use methods to mark or genetically modify stem cells, they will be able to use visualization techniques, they will have experience and earn knowledge in the field of basic stem cell biology and applications,

They will earn experience to conduct basic research based on clinical need and develop it from the laboratory towards the clinic, directed by interest, skills and training found in an appropriate environment for interdisciplinary group collaborations to obtain sufficient knowledge required to use stem cells with a clinical purpose, in an infrastructure that contains both basic science and medicine; in addition to stem cell treatment for regenerative purposes-oriented research, they will be able to direct research of disease pathogenesis topics, furthermore they will be able to plan original research targeting the use of stem cells for assessment of novel drugs and treatment targets,

They will acquire the skills to plan and think product-development-oriented by obtaining knowledge/gaining experience on the topic of necessary technologies to develop in a laboratory environment stem cell/gene therapy products that can be used in the clinic; being aware of legal regulations and ethical topics,

They will have acquired the skills to present the complicated stem cell science in an understandable and appropriate way at the level of the people,

Graduates will have the capacity to continue their career as an academic at universities.

D.14. Profile of the Programme


The program consists of compulsory classes with 31 ECTS merits, optional courses of 59 ECTS merits, a preparatory course fort he PhD proficiency exam of 30 ECTS and 120 ECTS merits for the doctoral thesis. They are allowed to choose their optional courses from other PhD and master programs.
