D.1. General Information about Program


Pharmaceutical chemistry is a multifaceted scientific dicipline that is dedicated to the improvement of human health through research leading to new concepts for the design and development of safe and effective therapeutic, diagnostic and environmental agents involving aspects of biological and pharmaceutical sciences. As defined, it is concerned with the design, preparation and identification of biologically active compounds, the study of their metabolism, the interpretation of their mode of action at the molecular level and the construction of structure activity relationships.

Our outstanding department has the best to offer in research opportunities and graduate education, with fourteen faculty, and twelve graduate students and post-doctoral research associates. Research in this department is inspired by the development of molecular approaches for design and synthesis of bio-active molecules for study and modulation of disease related processes on a molecular level. Our faculty are actively engaged in research for the discovery and development of new drugs and are exploiting new biological targets for the treatment of CNS and cardiovascular disorders, and infectious diseases. We blend conventional disciplines to allow for specialized research to be conducted in drug design, synthesis, analysis, and biological evaluation.

The goal of graduate program training in Pharmaceutical Chemistry is to prepare highly trained, versatile individuals for a career in the pharmaceutical sciences and we are proud of our record of outstanding graduate students who now enjoy fruitful careers in academia, the pharmaceutical industries as well as with government and other regulatory agencies.

Students who have Bachelor degree at pharmacy are accepted to apply to the program. 

The satisfaction of the application rules of Institute of Health Sciences for postgraduate education at Hacettepe University must be. The same rules of application are applicable to international students.

To have ALES (SAY / EA) score type and ALES and Foreign Language base score determined by the Health Sciences Institute Board and approved by the Hacettepe University Senate

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations


Master of Science program includes pharmaceutical chemistry thesis, thesis study and lectures with minimum total 21 credits. According to European Credit Transfer System, It includes lectures, which are at least 60 credits, and thesis study, which covers specific subject lectures and has at least 60 credits. The student should write the results of thesis study according to rules of the Institute and, present and defend the thesis in front of the jury.  The rules of postgraduate education of Hacettepe University are valid at every steps of the program.

D.7. Goals and Objectives


To educate pharmaceutical chemistry experts who have sufficient knowledge on research, they are able to improve in their fields, easily communicate with people he/she is working with, can fulfill his/her responsibilities both individually and as a team member, are well-educated, intellectual, and reliant on ethical issues by means of a global pharmaceutical chemistry education.

To educate students who have basic knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry, and they are able to design, synthesis and investigate their activities of anticonvulsant, antidepressant, analgesic-anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antianginal, antihypertensive, antilipidemic, vasodilator, diuretic drugs. Computer aided drug design and molecular modeling, synthesis optimization with computer, instrumental drug analysis, microwave and solid phase reactions, stereospesific synthesis and chiral separation studies.

The graduates of Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Chemistry can be in the academic team in Pharmaceutical Chemistry departments of universities and, can apply for doctorate programs. They can continue to their research activities or, can work in research departments of national and international universities, Ministry of Health, regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical industries.

D.14. Profile of the Programme


The aim of Master of Science program in Pharmaceutical Chemistry is to graduate fellows who have certain knowledge and skills, can make scientific research, can access to information, have the ability to evaluate and comment the information, have the certain ethical and social values as a global scientist in their field. A thesis study is prepared by the student of Master of Science besides the followings; lecture, seminar and application studies. The duration of education is 4 half semesters (2 years). First two half year are lecture section and then, next two half year are thesis section. From the first semester the courses could be taken in any semester.
