D.1. General Information about Program

Ankara State Conservatory was included in the scope of YÖK (Hacettepe University) together with all higher education institutions with the Decree Law No. 41 enacted in 1982 and the Law No. 2809 which replaced it in 1983. During the university process, graduate programmes have been opened since the beginning of the 1990s in order to train faculty members.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

In order to be accepted to the program, it is required to be an undergraduate graduate of the Composition Art Branch of State Conservatories or equivalent schools and to have passed the Entrance Examination. For international students, the conditions set by Hacettepe University for the admission of students from abroad are valid (http://www.iso.hacettepe.edu.tr).

Entrance Exam

Candidates who meet all the application requirements and apply in accordance with the rules determined by the University are taken to the Entrance Examination.

The Entrance Examination consists of two parts, the written exam, which is evaluated out of 60 (sixty) points, and the oral exam, which is evaluated out of 40 (forty) points, and is evaluated out of a total of 100 (one hundred) full points.

At the beginning of the written exam, a portfolio containing documents and records related to the candidate's curriculum vitae and artistic works is submitted to the Entrance Examination jury in 5 (five) copies. The documents that must be included in this portfolio are as follows:

  • List of works and sheet music: At least one of the works must be an orchestral work, at least one chamber music work and at least one solo work. The total vocalization time of all works must be at least 45 minutes.
  • Audio recordings of the works and video recordings, if any
  • Books, articles, papers or conference texts, if any

Candidates who do not submit this portfolio will be deemed to have waived their exam rights.

In the written exam, candidates are asked questions from the following four topics, each of which is evaluated out of 15 (fifteen) points:

  • Composition Analysis Methods: Harmony and form analysis on a work from the Classical or Romantic Period, as determined by the Entrance Examination jury.
  • Harmony: Analysis of a bass and soprano assignment determined by the Entrance Examination jury.
  • Fugue: Writing the Exposition part of a subject determined by the Entrance Examination jury.
  • Improvisation: Playing a monophonic piece determined by the Entrance Examination jury in accordance with its harmonic language and improvised with piano accompaniment.

Written exam papers are kept for two years.

In the oral exam, candidates are asked questions from the following five topics, each of which is evaluated over 8 (eight) points:

  • Music history and general art culture.
  • Composition techniques.
  • Knowledge of composition literature.
  • Instrumentation and orchestration knowledge.
  • Questions related to the works in the portfolio.

The oral exam is audio and video recorded and the recordings are kept for two years.

The overall success grade of the candidates is the sum of 40% of the undergraduate grade point average and 60% of the score obtained from the Entrance Exam and is evaluated over 100 (one hundred) full points.

Candidates who score at least 50 (fifty) points from the Entrance Examination and whose overall success grade is at least 60 (sixty) are successful and entitled to enroll in the program.

In order to graduate from the programme, the minimum national credit total is 24 and ECTS credit total is 120.

The aim of the programme is to train composers and educators who will work in music and music education institutions, who are equipped with advanced knowledge and skills, who have internalised the ethics of art and science, who closely follow and interpret the developments in their field, who contribute to these developments with their studies in scientific, technological, visual and auditory fields, who are foresighted, respectful, participatory and have a high level of aesthetic appreciation, who are open to innovations and developments.

Graduates of the programme can continue their life as a composer individually, or they can work as academicians in higher education institutions or as instructors in private sector art institutions.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The programme consists of 15 national credits of compulsory courses including KOM 600 Special Topics, KOM 601 - 602 Composition I - II, KOM 607 - 608 Solfege Teaching Techniques I - II, KOM 614 Seminar and 23 national credits of elective courses. The student has to complete the programme by taking the minimum 24 national credits and Seminar course required for graduation. There are a total of 38 local credit courses in the Master's Programme in Composition. The courses can be taken from the Department of Composition and Orchestral Conducting as well as from the Conservatory and other departments of the University and the university common pool.

            2. Requirements for graduation from the programme

In order to graduate from this programme, in addition to the graduation requirements specified in the relevant article of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations, in order to graduate from this programme, in addition to the graduation requirements specified in the relevant article of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations, it is required to successfully complete the Seminar course and field courses with not less than 24 local credits and 120 ECTS credits, and to submit to the Defence Examination jury the works written within the scope of the composition courses in the Programme and the computer-generated score and recording, if any, of at least 20 minutes of symphonic works, concertos, etc. to be written for the graduation exam. In addition to these, the Art Study Report on all the works written within the scope of the composition courses in the Master's degree education must be submitted to the Defence Examination jury together with the works.
