Hacettepe University Institute of Science - Department of Nuclear Engineering has offered Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree since 1977.
The language of education is Turkish.
There is a 'radiation detection and measurement laboratory' (located in the building of Physics Engineering) and a 'thermal-fluid laboratory' (located in the building of Mechanical Engineering), which are used by the department for experimental studies and research activities.
The department has a High Performance Parallel Computing System [16 nodes, 100 cores (300 GFlops)]. Because a considerable part of the educational and research activities carried out in the department require 'fast computing capability', the computing system mentioned bears great importance and is almost continuously in use. The capacity of the system is gradually increased by virtue of projects conducted by the members of our department.

University diploma in the fields of science or engineering is required for admission to this program. Conditions of application and admission are stated in Articles 14, 16 and 17 in Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination.
Students who completed their undergraduate education in a science or engineering field other than nuclear engineering are required to go through a scientific preparation program according to Article 7 in Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination.
To earn a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in nuclear engineering, one should;
(1) succeed in all required courses (a total of 12 ECTS credits) in the curriculum,
(2) gain at least 48 ECTS credits in elective courses, with at least 32 ECTS credits of that from NEM-coded elective courses,
(3) earn at least a total of 24 national credits and 60 ECTS credits from courses,
(4) complete a Master of Science (M.Sc.) thesis study.
Conditions specified in Article 30 in Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination are valid in any case.

To have students acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in the fields of nuclear engineering, technology and sciences, and gain ability to reach, evaluate and utilize information; to raise experts who have in-depth knowledge and computational experience in the areas related to nuclear energy; to have students graduate with capability to do research and development in applications of nuclear processes in energy production, industry, and medical and environmental sciences; and to prepare students for the doctorate program by directing them to areas in which research efforts are more appreciated.
Our graduates are employed mainly by Turkish Atomic Energy Authority and its associated research centers, Electricity Generation and Transmission Companies, and Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources; in addition, to a considerably lesser extent, by Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council and its associated research centers, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, University Techno-polis Companies, Energy Market Regulatory Authority, oncology and imaging centers as engineers and researchers. Besides, a considerable number of our graduates work as academics at universities.
A significant number of our graduates have gone abroad for graduate study. Many reputable universities worldwide (mostly in the U.S.) accept our graduates with necessary qualifications as research and/or teaching assistants. Some of our graduates who have received graduate degrees abroad have been working for leading international companies, research facilities and institutes.

Master of Science degree program in nuclear engineering is comprised of at least 60 ECTS credits from the courses and 60 ECTS credits from the M.Sc. thesis study. (1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25 hours of workload per semester.) The total ECTS credits of the required courses in the program are 12, which is 20 % of the total course load and 10 % of the minimum total ECTS credits (120) required for completion of the program.
“Nuclear Reactor Laboratory” (8 ECTS credits) and “Seminar” (4 ECTS credits) are the required courses.
The minimum number of ECTS credits which should be earned from elective courses is 48; at least 32 ECTS credits of elective courses should be collected from NEM-coded electives.
An M.Sc. student can take elective courses in the Doctorate (Ph.D.) program of the Department of Nuclear Engineering. Then, there are a total of 27 courses which can be taken as “elective” during the M.Sc. program, 9 of which are labeled as M.Sc. courses and 18 of which as the Doctorate courses.
An M.Sc. student can take at most 2 fourth-year courses (NEM400-coded) that she/he did not take before from the undergraduate program. An M.Sc. student can take courses in the graduate programs of other departments with consent of her/his advisor and the department offering the course.
In the program, there is no course with a prerequisite, and no course is taught on annual basis. Of the courses in the curriculum, Nuclear Reactor Laboratory and courses involving project assignments are intended for applications.
For each course, the methods used in assessment and grading are described in the “Assessment Methods” table contained in the course information package prepared by instructors. For the examination regulations and the grading system, relevant Articles in Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination are in force.
