D.1. General Information about Program

Back

The PhD program of the Department of Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine has started its activities within Hacettepe University-Institute of Science and Technology since 2007-2008 academic year. Nanotechnology and nanomedicine is one of the hottest and most intensively studied research areas of today. The interdisciplinary PhD program of the Department of Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine, which was implemented by combining the infrastructure of Hacettepe University in the fields of medicine and health sciences, science and engineering, continues its education-training and research-development activities with the support of faculty members and infrastructure from five different faculties (Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy). Students take courses related to the field of their choice during their doctoral education and carry out their thesis studies under the guidance of a faculty member related to the subject. Education language is Turkish.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Back

Candidates who have completed the master's program in the Department of Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine or an equivalent master's program or have completed the relevant master's programs in the institutes of science and engineering sciences of universities can apply to the doctoral program. The academic qualifications of the candidates and their suitability for the program are approved by the Academic Board of the Department. Candidates must have the ALES (Academic Graduate Education Examination) score type appropriate to the program to which they apply, the ALES standard score to be determined by the University Senate and foreign language proficiency are required.

The quotas of students to be admitted to the doctoral program, the documents required for application, the exam and its date and other conditions are determined and applied in accordance with the provisions of the relevant article of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulation (//www.fenbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/26112016yonetmelik.pdf).

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Back

The PhD program consists of courses, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, thesis study and thesis defense exam in accordance with the provisions of the relevant article of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations (//www.fenbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/file/yonetmelik/hulisansustuogrvesinavyonetmelik.pdf). For graduation from the program, a total of 240 ECTS courses must be taken, including 120 credits of course load and 120 credits of thesis work according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). For graduation from the program, a minimum of 36 national credits (120 ECTS) must be taken, excluding the Special Topics course. 1 ECTS credit is equivalent to 30 hours of workload.

Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine doctoral program students are obliged to successfully complete the compulsory NNT 739 Advances in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine I, NNT 740 Advances in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine II and NNT 745 Doctoral Seminar courses and other elective courses with the supervision of the Head of the Department and the approval of the course advisors.

Students can take the courses in the determined course program, and if deemed necessary by their advisors, they can also complete credits by taking undergraduate and graduate courses opened in the relevant departments of the university or other universities (The total credit of elective courses outside the field cannot be more than 1/3 of the total course credits taken by the student). The program courses to be offered each semester are determined by the Academic Board of the Department. Students enrolled in the PhD Program, after completing their courses as stated above, code the NNT 702 Preparation for Doctoral Qualifying Examination course in the following semester and at the end of the semester, they are examined by the Doctoral Qualifying Jury, which is formed by the Department according to the relevant articles of `Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations' and approved by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, according to the rules determined in the relevant regulations. The student who successfully completes the doctoral qualifying exam must prepare a thesis under the supervision of his/her advisor by coding NNT 700 Special Topics. The thesis advisor (co-advisor, if any) is recommended by the Department and approved and appointed by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. Thesis topic proposals are submitted to the approval of the Academic Board of the Department and finalized. The thesis topic proposal approved by the Department is notified to the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. The entire program, including the monitoring, writing and defense of the thesis, must be completed within the period specified in the provisions of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations. Students who complete their programs are awarded PhD diplomas in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine.

There is no internship requirement for graduation.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Back

Graduate courses that a student has taken from domestic/foreign higher education institutions in the last five years before enrolling in the institute, including graduate courses taken as a special student, can be transferred to the program in which the student is enrolled with the opinion of the advisor, the recommendation of the academic department board and the decision of the institute board of directors. However, it cannot exceed 50% of the total credit amount in the program in which the student is enrolled. (//www.fenbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/26112016yonetmelik.pdf))

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Back

The aim of the program was determined as to train individuals specializing in the field of nanotechnology and nanomedicine who can contribute to the scientific and economic development of our country and all of humanity, to carry out top-level multidisciplinary research, to produce advanced technologies and cutting-edge materials and systems, to disseminate the information in national and international levels, to create a national and international networks in the field of nanotechnology and nanomedicine (meetings, joint research, exchange information etc.), to increase the collaboration in research, capacity and diversity in the field of nanotechnology & nanomedicine.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Back

Graduates from nanotechnology and nanomedicine division Ph.D. program including pure science, engineering and health sciences, can find employment opportunities in different sectors due to the multidisciplinary character of the program. They may actively work as experts, managers and researchers at various indusrial areas (biology, chemistry, physics, electronics and medicine etc.), research and development laboratories, research centers and production and quality control areas. The graduates can also work in the universities and different research institutes and laboratories as academician or researcher. They may also apply to the post-doctoral programs in the national universities and abroad.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Back

Profile of the program was also explained in the qualification requirements and regulations section. NNT739-Advances in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine I, NNT740  Advances in Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine II and NNT745 Ph. D. Seminar courses are must courses.  All remaining courses are elective. Other elective courses from an another division in Institute of Graduate Studies in Science should not be exceeded  1/3 of the total course credits. The elective courses are chosen by considering  advice of  supervisor of  Ph.D. thesis. Thesis subject can be envisioned  by considering the recent tendencies in nanotechnology and nanomedicine,  as well as relying on the new technological advances, trends and innovative approaches and to bring a solution for the industrial problems. Thesis work can be based on an experimental and theoretical study.
