D.1. General Information about Program

Back

The Biotechnology graduate programme was established in1992 by the attendance of academic staff and their assistants existing in the Departments of General Biology and Molecular Biology. Dated from this establishment, Prof. Dr. Nazif KOLANKAYA, Prof. Dr. Nilüfer AKSÖZ and Prof. Dr. Reyhan ÖNER were undertaken the task of presidency of this programme. Since 2018, Prof. Dr. Nilüfer CİHANGİR has continued the task of presidency of this programme.

The aim of biotechnology is to manufacture products and services, by using living organisms and biological systems with scientific techniques, without harming environment. To serve this purpose, several studies in laboratories of Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Production, Chemical Analysis and Microbial Culture and Taxonomy are carried out in our department.

In the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory, studies such as treatment of various environmental pollution causing wastes (industrial, agricultural and domestic) by using microorganisms and/or their products, decolorization and biodegradation of various environmental pollutants are being applied.

In the Microbial Production Laboratory, many substances such as various enzymes obtained from different microbial sources, plant growth regulators and antimicrobial materials are being produced.

In the Microbial Taxonomy and Culture Collection Laboratory, studies on diagnosis of diverse microorganisms are being applied. In addition to studies related with bacterial genetics, studies on application of identification and susceptibility tests to diverse species, typing of these species by using different molecular typing methods and investigation of presence of any probable clonal relationship between these different species are carried out.

In the Chemical Analysis Laboratory, application of all the chemical analyses that may be required throughout the studies being applied in each of our laboratories is provided.

Many graduate thesis and projects which are supported by some institutions are still carried on in our department. In these studies, research assistants and graduate students who work devotedly, carry out their studies under the guidance of their supervisors existing in this department. Till today, various master and doctorate thesis were managed by academic staff of biotechnology department.
