Social, cultural, scientific and technological developments occurring in the World and in Turkey caused changes in the properties that students as the prolific members of society should have in the future. Thus, the capabilities and skills that the graduates of the new century are expected to possess came into prominence. The capabilities and skills students need to gain are as in the following: communication in native language, communication in foreign languages, competence in mathematics, competence in science and technology, digital competence, learning to learn, using the initiative and perception of entrepreneurship, social and public competence, and cultural awareness and expression. Besides, the curricula renewed accordingly in our country also includes personal, interpersonal and cognitive skills such as literacy (health, literacy, scientific literacy, environmental literacy, financial literacy, technological literacy, information literacy, media literacy, etc.) and socio-cultural awareness. 2023 education vision? , which was published by the Ministry of National Education, sets such targets as getting students to gain awareness of generating reformatory solutions to the problems in their environment at earlier ages and to gain skills of generating those solutions by blending them with disciplines such as mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences and fine arts; to get them to use information technologies as an instrument of production?, developing solutions to problems and as an instrument of putting their dreams into action; and to get them to use the digital content as an instrument by creating classroom environments which direct them into inquiry, schematic thinking, conceptual learning which are suitable to work individually or in groups. Training leader teachers who can actively use and develop technological materials is encouraged by means of those targets. Â
Environmental literacy, which is one of the capabilities and skills called the skills of the 21st century and which is emphasised in the new curricula, is one of the objectives of environmental education. Environmental education has become obligatory especially to recognise environmental problems, to struggles with those problems and to minimise them.
The purpose in opening, technology and environmental education in chemistry education non-thesis distance post-graduate programme is to enable students to do in-depth analysis and to make interpretation of the scientific subjects related to chemistry, technology and environmental education; to develop technology-assisted materials and to use them in their classes actively; to have environmental awareness and offer solutions to relevant problems and to gain skills to do research in the field of chemistry, technology and environmental education independently.Â
The programme is important especially in that it contains the capabilities and skills emphasised in the curricula and in 2023 educational vision. Those who join the programme will have the opportunity to take courses related to technology and environmental education in addition to course in chemistry by blending the three areas together in the programme. Running the programme as distance education will solve the time and place problems of those who live outside Ankara. Besides, compared to the post-graduate programmes in Turkey, this programme will have additional value due to the fact that it is a non-thesis and a distance education programme.Â
