D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Turkish Folklore Department, which provided a dimension to academic folklore studies in Turkey, is established by Prof. Dr. Dursun Yıldırım. As a result of Prof. Dr. Dursun Yıldırım's report entitled “General Information About Folklore and Considerations on Establishing Folklore Divisions in Our Universities” which was given to The Council of Higher Education and the discussions which he initiated at “I. National Culture Council”, The Council of Higher Education decided to open Turkish Folkore Divisions in Universites in order to give education in Licence, Master and Phd degrees. After this decision, in 1982, under the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, Turkish Folklore Division has started education. Today, Our Department, which is the first and the modal of many Folklore Divisions and Departments established in many Universities, is seen as a center in which many valuable scholars had their education.

Turkish Folklore Division resumes its educational activities with the aims of compiling and analysing oral and material elements of culture in historical geography of Turkic World in the light of folklore theories and methods and making contribution to the development of Turkic World studies.

Today, there are 8000 books in our division's Necdet-Neşide Sançar Donation Library. Also, our users have access to License and Master Thesis which were carried out within our division, in our division's website.
