D.1. General Information about Program

Public health doctoral program at the Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences began with the establishment of the Institute of Community Medicine in 1966. The first public health doctoral degrees were awarded in 1972. Community Medicine Institute was closed by the Higher Education Law in 1981. The master's and doctoral programs continued under the Institute of Health Sciences. The Department of Public Health (Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine) was in charge of the public health doctoral program.

In October 2014, the public health doctoral program was transfered to the Hacettepe Institute of Public Health and its Department of Public Health was in charge of the program.

In June 2016, the program was transferred back to the Institute of Health Sciences. The Department of Public Health (Hacettepe Faculty of Medicine) is currently in charge of the program.

Public health doctoral program provides students with the knowledge and skills required to carry out and evaluate public health programs and to conduct scientific research in public health.

The graduate program is four years (four semesters). Required and elective courses are taken in the first three semesters of the program. During this period, students must take at least 36 credits. In the fourth semester of the program "Doctoral qualifying exam preparation" course is taken. If the students are successful on "qualification examination” at the end of the fourth semester, they start a thesis work. The last four semesters of the program constitute of the thesis study. Students who are successful in the defense of the thesis receive a “Doctoral Degree in Public Health”.

The language of instruction is Turkish.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine or candidates with a MSc degree in public health are accepted to this program.

The student candidates need to fulfill the requirements specified in the By Law of Hacettepe University on Postgraduate Studies and Examinations.

Foreign students can also apply for the program.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students have to complete at least 90 ECTS in the first three semesters and "PhD qualification exam preparation" course (30 ECTS) in the forth semester successfully. After being succesful on the “Doctoral Qualification Exam”, the students pass to thesis preparation stage. According to the results of course examinations, students must have taken note of at least 3,0. The doctoral thesis must fulfill one of the attributes which are innovation to science, development a new scientific method or performing a known method into new field. Thesis to be prepared constitutes of 120 ECTS. After completion of the thesis study, the candidate presents thesis to a jury. If the candidate is successful in knowledge, interpretation and synthesis on issues related to the thesis study, he/she can be accepted as "successfully completed” the Doctoral degree.

The students are subject to the By Law of Hacettepe University on Postgraduate Studies and Examinations.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Students are allowed for lateral transfer, and credit transfer between programs according to the By Law of Hacettepe University on Post-Graduate Studies and Examinations.

The aim of the program is to gain ability on identifying the steps needed to reach a new synthesis by conducting an independent study regarding the improvement of the quality of life and the health status of the community, examining public health events widely and deeply with a view by considering the philosophy and practice of public health.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the Doctoral Degree Program in Public Health can find a position at the central and provincial level of the Ministry of Health and its affiliates, as well as academic institutions, private corporations and non-governmental organizations related to the field of public health.

Students have to complete at least 90 ECTS in the first three semesters and "PhD qualification exam preparation" course (30 ECTS) in the forth semester successfully. At least 120 ECTS must be taken by the required and elective courses. Students may take courses from other programs that are not included in the list. Students may take elective courses for the preliminary work of thesis topic with the recommendation of the consultant after completion of the required courses. Elective courses in the program or other courses at the university`s course pool can be selected.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course are described in the course info packs prepared by each instructor. After completing their courses in four semesters, students need to pass the PhD qualification exam before they continue with their thesis work. For the examinations and pass grades, respective articles of the By Law of Hacettepe University on Post-Graduate Studies and Examinations shall be applied.
