D.1. General Information about Program

Communication Sciences Ph.D. program education was accepted by Higher Education Institution (YÖK) and began on 08.15.2012. Just as the graduate program of Communication Sciences, communication is regarded as an interdisciplinary field and the courses of the program include contemporary and advanced theoretical and methodological approaches. Critical and creative thinking is the basis of the program and the aim is to promote specific research and study contributions to the communication field.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. Applicants who apply to the program must have completed a four-year Bachelor's Degree with an average of at least 3.00 over 4.00 (four).

2. Applicants are required to score at least 60 standard points from either one of the quantitative or verbal or equal weight categories of the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Examination (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimine Giriş Sınavı, ALES) organized by Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (Ölçme, Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi, ÖSYM). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score, determined by the Hacettepe University Senate, in the internationally recognized GRE and GMAT examinations.

3. Applicants are required to score at least 70 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabancı Dil Seviye Tespit Sınavı, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ÖSYM.

4. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

5. The students who are admitted to the program might be required to take relevant course/s from the Communication Sciences Graduate Scientific Preparation Programme, in case deemed to be a necessary by the jury of the oral exam.

6. Those conditions, which are not included below, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüst Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).

Special Requirements for the Admission of Graduate Programme of Communication Sciences

Applicants should submit,

· -at least- one-page letter of intent (Font: Times New Roman, Font Size: 12, 1.5 Line Spacing) explaining the candidate's reasons for pursuing graduate study in Communication Sciences or Cultural Studies and Media, or doctorate study in Communication Sciences

· a curriculum vitae (cv) with photo,

· two letters of reference handed in closed envelopes

to Hacettepe University Faculty of Communication, Department of Communication Sciences with the above documents.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The Ph.D. program graduation requirements of HÜ Higher Education and Testing Legislation are valid for the program in addition to 2 compulsory seminar courses matching students' fields of interest. The students, who pass the Ph.D. proficiency exam and who submit their doctorate thesis that is defended to the jury, gain the right to have the Ph.D. degree.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Aim of the Ph.D. program of Communication Sciences is to raise people who; masters the contemporary and advanced approaches, concepts and the relationship among these concepts and has the skills to use these in a research.; has the understanding of the interaction between communication sciences and the other social sciences, follows the discussions and evaluates them; contributes to scientific knowledge through carrying out an original research, program or project independently; enriches the knowledge through creating original work or bringing new discussions on the existing work and circulates these discussions through producing national and international publications; has a creative and critical thinking and develops new ideas, methods and techniques in his/her area, using the advanced level of decision making such as problem solving, comparisons and planning, etc; circulates the innovations through the publications she/he produces and supports the partners and institutions in their efforts to solve problems in the area; solves and evaluates the new and complex ideas and discussions, resulting from the interactions with other disciplines; reaches original results from these evaluations, contributes to the development of solutions for the scientific, cultural and ethical problems and supports the improvements on these issues.

The graduates, who complete this program, can work as instructors in faculties of communication as well as working in positions such as communication expert, communication consultant and print consultant in the media sector and state institutions.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The students, who are needed to take courses from Preparatory Program, join the compulsory courses and to be able to register to the courses of Ph.D. program, they should complete the preparatory session. The seminar courses in the Ph.D. program of Communication Sciences are (not all the seminar courses but two of them) compulsory while all the other courses are elective. In this program 1 ECTS credit is equal to 30 hours of workload.
