The Master's programme in Demography at Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies, since 1968, is a combination of two demography Master's programmes in Turkey: Economic and Social Demography and Technical Demography. These programmes are combined according to the contemporary needs and Institute of Population Studies' objectives.
The medium of instruction is English.
There is a documentation center specialised in demography and a computer study students can use for learning purposes in the Institute of Population Studies.

Admission of foreign students to the program is decided after the necessary documents are received and evaluated by the Institute of Population Studies.In 2022-2023 academic year fall semester 20 quotas for national and 5 quotas for international students have been opened.

In order to get a master's degree in Demography, students are expected to complete 120 ECTS (21 national credits) credits. The program consists of 4 semesters; class taking in the first two semesters; and thesis writing in the last two semesters. Before proceeding with thesis work, 60 ECTS credits worth of classes should be completed. The minimum grade to succeed in a class is C1 (2,5 in a 4-grade system, or 65-69 percent, Hacettepe University Graduate Education Regulations, Item 16). To graduate from the master's program in Demography, students must have a CGPA of B3 (2,75 in a 4-grade system, or 65-69 percent).
Students can choose to take their elective courses from the PhD program in Demography. Furthermore, they can choose to take a maximum of two elective courses from other graduate programs with the approval of their advisors.

According to the Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Exam Regulations, a student can transfer classes they have already taken if: these classes have been taken from graduate schools in Turkey or abroad within the last five years preceding the date of registration to the program - including classes taken as a special student - and their advisor, the Department and the Institute Board approves.
The master's degree program in Demography aims to provide education in order to support social, economic, and scientific development; to ensure the production and diffusion of demographic data and demographic information; to raise awareness about population issues, to support policy making and policy implementation regarding population issues and to prepare individuals for the doctorate level education in the field of Demography.
The alumni of the program are potential employees of government agencies such as Turkish Statistical Institute, Presidency of Strategy and Budget, General Directorate of Population and Civil Affairs, and Development Agencies, as well as private institutions specialised in research and international institutions. The fact that the medium of instruction is English facilitates pursuing a career abroad or in international institutions.

The proportion of must courses is 62.5% and the proportion of elective courses is 37.5% in the program. Students are free to take elective courses from other departments with the approval of their advisors. In order to accept a course from another program as a must course; a procedure similar to that in item f is followed, in line with the Hacettepe University Graduate Education Regulations (Items 16 and 21). The classes offered at the department of Demography are semester courses; DEM601 - Introduction to Demographic Analysis is the prerequisite of DEM603 - Demographic Modals course. While the compulsory courses in the program give the student basic information about the field, the elective courses aim to provide the student with the knowledge, skills and competencies related to the special fields that they may want to focus on in the future. Program students are required take the SAY601 - Fundamentals of Social Survey Methodology course from the Department of Social Research Methodology.

f.     The structure of the program in terms of years: Students need to complete a total of 8 courses within the first two semesters; 5 must-courses and 3 electives. Two more courses are taken in the following two semesters for thesis writing. Students begin their thesis work in the third semester under the supervision of their advisors; and complete them at the end of the fourth semester; thus gaining eligibility for the MA degree.
The methods of grading and assessing differ for each class, and are defined in the syllabi prepared by faculty. Students accepted to the MA program in Demography are required to complete a total of a minimum of 24 national credits (120 ECTS) within 2 academic years.
