Choreology is a writing notation system that developped for archiving ballet works. This system, which is the most current among lots of writing techniques is Benesh Movement Notation introduced in the UK in 1955.
Dance notation has been attached in training program for the first time in 1966 in Ankara State Conservatory Ballet Department under the name of ‘Dance Notation'.
This course, taught by Suna Eden Åženel who is sent to the Institute of Choreology in London and one of the first graduates of the Institute.
In 1987, Rosalynd Elliott from The Benesh Institute of Choreology called upon provide training, and the Choreology – Choreography Department was established under the Ballet Department.
In 1998 Master's Degree Programme opened with initative of the head of Choreology Art Department Ç.Seda Altuğ.
Hacettepe University is the only university in Turkey trains Turkish Choreologist with 4 year bachelor's and master program.
Choreology Dept., undergraduate and graduate programs carried out today, teaches all sub-disciplines of modern methods and techniques of Choreology and closely follow the international arena. The current studies and scientific publications continues to contribute to strong academic background.

In order to be a graduate of Dept. Of Choreology Arts of Fine Master's Degree Programme, including common mandatory and elective courses, a national credit total of 25, is required to obtain whereas ECTS credits needed is a total of 120.

The aims of the Dept. Of Choreology Arts of Fine Master's Degree programme are the followings:
Choreology Art Department Master's Degree programme aims; train qualified teaching staff for Choreology Department which establiseh in 1987. In addition, recording Classical Ballet, Modern Dance, Character and Turkish Folk Dances repertoire with notation and all nuances, protecting them and ensure the cration of the archive at the H.U. State Conservatory.
Students who gradutate from this pragramme, can be an instructor in this area at the conservatory and equivalent institutions and can work as an choreographer, repetitor, conduvit in ballet, dance, theatre and similar instititions

Graduates of this programme can continue to proficiency in the art of department or competence in other fields that accept graduates of this programme in art or doctorate programmes in case they provide the circumstances.
Student's vocational course exams are performed in front of a commission includes instructors of the department. Evaluation and assessment methods for each course, defined in ‘Course Teaching Plan' information package prepared by the instructors.
