Department of economics is pursuing a master programme since 1973-1974 academic year, and pursuing the PhD programme since 1976-1977 academic year. The aim of the masters programme is to provide general economics knowledge and reseach methods in terms of theory and application, to the students at the graduate level. The aim of the PhD programme is to educate academics to the existing and newly opened universities and to provide an opprtunity to those who wish to specialize in certain branches of economics.Â

1. To hold an undergraduate or graduate degree from accredited institution and at least one of the degrees should be in economics.
2. Applicants are required to score at least 70 standard points from equally weight categories of the Academic Staff and Graduate Education Examination (Akademik Personel ve Lisansüstü Eğitimine Giriş Sınavı, ALES) organized by Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (Ölçme, Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi, ÖSYM). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score, determined by the Hacettepe University Senate, in the internationally recognized GRE and GMAT examinations.
3. Applicants are required to score at least 75 in the Foreign Knowledge in Foreign Language Placement Examination (Yabancı Dil Seviye Tespit Sınavı, YDS). Alternatively, applicants are required to submit an equivalent score from other foreign language examinations, held at the national or international level, whose equivalence is approved by ÖSYM.
4. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).
5. The students who are admitted to the program might be required to take relevant course/s from the Scientific Preparation Programme, in case deemed to be a necessary by the jury of the oral exam.
6. Those conditions, which are not included, are applied in accordance with the related provisions of the Hacettepe University Graduate Education, Instruction and Examination Regulations (Hacettepe Üniversitesi Lisansüst Eğitim, Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği).
In case, their education found to be insufficient, to enroll in the masters level of education for one or two semesters might be necessary, for those who were successful in the entrance exam and who have registered to the Institute of Social Sciences. In order for the student to gain doctorate degree, s/he must register for 5 must courses and also register for at least 5 elective courses which will form at least two areas of expertise. Hence s/he must complete 10 courses which is 27 local credits. Further, s/he must be successful in the comprehensive proficiency exam. Additionally, s/he is required to be successful in the special topics course and to complete a PhD thesis under the supervision of a supervisor. And finally to be successful in the thesis defence.
The candidates are required to have a minimum of masters degree.
The aim of the PhD programme is to provide an opportunity for candidates to gain specialty in economics. With this aim, in addition to the compulsory courses there is a wide range of elective courses. The candidates can determine specific areas of expertise and can develop themselves in those areas.
Graduates form Hacettepe University Economics Department, PhD degree have opportunities to be employed in prestigeous universities or in government institutions.
