D.1. General Information about Program

Ankara State Conservatory leading among the first contemporary educational institutions of our Republic kept on its education affiliated to Ministry of National Education between 1934-1974 and to General Directorate of Fine Arts of Ministry of Culture between 1971-1982. With the statutory decree no: 41,issued in 1982 and the Law no: 2809, replacing that in 1983, Ankara State Conservatory was taken within universities (within Hacettepe University) together with all higher education institutions.

The education of orchestra and Chorus Conducting which is applied as course in Composition Branch's Undergraduate Program in this period has been continued at “Postgraduate program of Orchestra and Chorus Conducting” within the branch of Composition and Orchestra Conducting as from 1990's. In this process, dear masters like Prof. Hikmet ŞİMÅžEK, Prof. Sabahattin KALENDER, Prof. Rengim GÖKMEN and Prof. Erol ERDÄ°NÇ have lectured in Orchestra Conducting Program.

By means of postgraduate program of orchestra Conducting in force, concerts are given with the practical studies performed with elegant samples from national and international repertoire by offering education via contemporary method and techniques towards all sub-disciplines of music, the contribution to scientific and artistic environment is lasted.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

In order to apply for the programme, in addition to the conditions required by the current legislation, it is required to have at least a 4 (four) year undergraduate diploma in the fields of music, music education, music science, musicology or performing arts (Singing-Opera) from state conservatories and faculties of education or equivalent educational institutions.

Entrance Examination

Candidates who fulfil all the application requirements and apply in accordance with the rules determined by the University are taken to the Entrance Examination.

The Entrance Exam consists of three parts: an oral exam, which is evaluated on 15 (fifteen) points, a performance exam, which is evaluated on 30 (thirty) points, and a written exam, which is evaluated on 55 (fifty-five) points, and is evaluated on a total of 100 (one hundred) full points.

In the oral exam, candidates are asked questions from the following three topics:

- Instrumentation and orchestration knowledge (5 [five] points)

- Music history and general art culture (5 [five] points)

- Score knowledge: Composers, periods and details of the scores given by the Entrance Examination jury (5 [five] points)

The oral exam is audio and video recorded and the recordings are kept for two years.

In the performance exam, candidates are asked questions from the following three topics:

- Reading and playing the score: Performance on the piano of a work written for string ensemble, determined by the Entrance Examination jury (5 [five] points)

- Piano performance: a work from the Baroque period and a selection from the Classical or Romantic periods 

- Conducting: Conducting 1 (one) symphonic work in one movement or 1 (one) symphonic work movement by heart accompanied by two pianos (15 [fifteen] points)

Candidates will provide 2 (two) pianists to accompany them in the exam.

The performance exam is audio and video recorded and the recordings are kept for two years.

In the written exam, candidates are asked questions from the following four topics:

- Harmony: Analysing the bass and soprano assignment set by the Entrance Examination jury (10 [ten] points)

- Hearing: Dictation of at least 8 (eight) atonal monophonic and tonal sections of at least 8 (eight) measures from the works determined by the Entrance Examination jury (15+15 [thirty] points)

- Counterpoint: Analysing the counterpoint assignment set by the Entrance Examination jury (10 [ten] points)

- Turkish Composition: Writing an essay in Turkish on a music-related topic determined by the Entrance Examination jury (5 [five] points)

Written exam papers are kept for two years.

The overall success grade of the candidates is the sum of 40% of the undergraduate grade point average and 60% of the score obtained from the Entrance Examination and is evaluated over 100 (one hundred) full points.

Candidates who score at least 50 (fifty) points in the Entrance Examination and whose overall success grade is at least 60 (sixty) are considered successful. In case of equality of the general success grade, the score of the Entrance Examination is taken into consideration.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the Orchestra and Chorus Conducting in Art, students has to complete a minimum of 24 national credits and 240 ECTS credits, their Work Art Report and the result of Graduation Exam are found successful.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

In the recognition of prior learning, the conditions specified in the relevant articles of Hacettepe University Associate Degree, Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations apply.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim of the programme is to train orchestra and choir conductors who will take part in art and educational institutions, who have the manual technique that enables them to create an original style, who have gained experience, who have the ability to bring a competent style and an original interpretation in the performance and interpretation of historical and contemporary musical works, who have the ways and methods of performing styles and forms belonging to various periods, who have the high intellectual qualities required by the profession, who are equipped with psychological and pedagogical high leadership qualities.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of the programme can apply for conducting positions in music institutions in the public or private sector, and can take part in courses that require conducting equipment such as orchestra, choir, partitur playing etc. in universities.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

There are 15 national credits of compulsory courses in the programme. In order to complete the minimum 24 national credits required for graduation, the student must take at least 10 national credits of elective courses. The programme has a total of 120 ECTS credits, 100 of which are compulsory courses and 20 of which are elective courses.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The measurement and evaluation methods applied for each course are defined in the "Course Teaching Plan" prepared by the relevant faculty member and included in the Information Package. Articles 23-28 of Hacettepe University Associate and Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations are applied regarding exams and course grades (http://www.gse.hacettepe.edu.tr).

            2. Requirements for graduation from the programme

In order to graduate from this programme, in addition to the graduation requirements specified in Article 30 of the Hacettepe University Associate Degree, Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations, the student must complete at least 24 national credits and 120 ECTS credits and be found successful by the Defence Examination jury with the Artwork Report.
