Course objectiveThe aim of this course is to discuss the course of socialist thought and socialist movement in Turkey from the Ottoman period to the present. 
Learning outcomes
  1. Explain the debates on socialism in Turkey from the Ottoman period to the present.
  2. Analyse the roles played by organizations such as the Socialist Party, associations, etc. in Turkish political life.
  3. Discuss the relationship between socialism and other traditions of thought in Turkey and to discuss them in a historical context.
Course ContentThis course covers the followings:
- labour organisations established after the Second Constitutional Monarchy,
- the roles played by socialist organizations during the National Struggle,
- tensions between socialism and the regime starting from the early Republican period,
- popularization of the socialist movement after 1960,
- disintegration after 1980,
- reorganization and new social movements after 1990.
