Course objectiveThis course aims to discuss the theories of culture, the typology of culture and the characteristic of the steppe culture vis-à-vis the interdisciplinary nature of Turkish Studies. The student utilizing both the theories of culture and the methodology of Turkish Studies will readdress the reciprocal relation of both concepts. 
Learning outcomes
  1. After completing the course the student should be able to:
  2. -be familiar with the research area of Turkish Studies; know its history, geography, demography, economy and socio-cultural trends as well as its basic bibliography
  3. -become acquainted with the scope and breath of theories on culture
  4. -understand the correlation between language-culture, language-history, language-arts
  5. -gains information about the studies in the world in the field of Turkish studies
  6. -gains knowledge about cultural theories and studies in the world
  7. -get acquainted with different cultures and specifically the steppe culture
  8. -become aware of secondary literature and primary sources on Turkish Studies
Course ContentA survey of the pioneers? work in the field of Turkish Studies: Radloff, Thomsen and Cohen
The evolution of Turkish Studies in language, history, culture, politics and geography
Assessment of the primary sources on Turkish Studies
Methodological developments of the 20th century on Turkish Studies
Utilizing four concepts of the theories of Culture to assess Turkish Studies:
1/ Holistic theories
2/ Cultural anthropology
3/ Cultural elements theory
4/ Hermeneutic theories
Assessment of Turkish Culture in view of 19th and 20th century theorists on culture (Marx, Malinowski, Mead, taylor, Turner, Ogburn and others)
