Course objectiveThis seminar investigates the life of women in Ottoman lands.  
Learning outcomes
  1. By the end of the course student, gets familiar with the gender theories
  2. learns the fields that gender perspective opened in the field of history with its examples
  3. attains a comparative perspective to the women in Ottoman Empire
  4. investigates the role of women in public space, her property relations, socioeconomic activities, her place in family structure.
  5. analyses the effects of changes in the Ottoman society to the women in the public space.
Course ContentA variety of sources, including literary, theological, legal, historical, and socio-anthropological will be read. Readings for each class will attempt to combine theoretical works, historical writings, and primary sources, to investigate gender relations in different periods.
