Course objectiveOttoman-European Diplomatic Relationships after 1789 
Learning outcomes
  1. By the end of this course the student, recognises the changing dynamics of the Ottoman-European relations after 1789
  2. analyses the consequences of Küçük Kaynarca treaty on multi-national structure of the Ottoman State
  3. analyses the impact of the French Revolution of 1789 on Europe and on the Ottoman State
  4. explains the balance of powers emerged with the occupation of Egypt by France
  5. evaluates international impact of the Greek upraisings and Egyptian Question from the Ottoman perspective.
  6. analyses Tanzimat and the Ottoman diplomacy
  7. analyses the consequences of 1876-78 the Ottoman-Russian war
  8. analyses the Ottoman-European relations on the path to WWI.
Course ContentKüçük Kaynarca treaty and its consequences; the French Revolution of 1789 and the Ottoman-Europe Relations; Ottoman-Austrian-Hungarian, Ottoman-Russian relations; the Greek Independence movement (1814-1829) and Europe; Egyptian Question; Tanzimat and search for new diplomacy in the Ottoman Empire Ottoman Russian relations and the Crimean war.
