Course objectiveTo lead students in examining the political, administrative, and military history of the Ottoman Empire, from its foundation up until 1699. 
Learning outcomes
  1. By the end of this course the student, distinguishes between the various approaches to periodisation in Ottoman history;
  2. analyses the approaches used in historical and current studies of the political, administrative, and military history of the Ottoman Empire from its founding up until the year 1699;
  3. utilizes Ottoman historical sources;
  4. questions and debates the factors that influenced the transition from a principality to a state and then an empire; and
  5. evaluates the decline and transition periods that occurred during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
Course Content(From the emergence of the Ottomans up until 1699)
The course will follow in chronological order the foundation of the Ottoman Empire, its expansion, its development in military, administrative and political institutions, and its relations with other contemporary states.
