Course objectiveThe objective of this course is; to provide insight on health economics by providing knowledge on basic concepts, definitions and study areas of health economics, importance of prioritization in health care, factors effecting health status, demand and supply analysis in health care, basic characteristics of health care market, equity and equality, health care financing, examples from World and Turkey, health systems, examples from World and Turkey, cost concept in health care, and basic characteristics of economic evaluation methods in health care.  
Learning outcomes
  1. At the end of this course, student will be able to: tell objective,description and the basic concepts of health economics, discuss the importance of prioritization in health care,
  2. discuss the factors effecting health status and inequalities in health and develop recommendations to tackle with this problem, know how to use demand and supply of some goods as a tool to intervene the health care market,
  3. know basic characteristics of health care market and can use these characteristics as a tool for market interventions, define equity and equality in health care
  4. discuss alternative ways of health care financing, interpret the status in Turkey in health care financing and tell the institutions that has either direct or indirect role in health policy, planning and finance,
  5. make comparisons among different countries in health finance, develop reccommendations for achieving better health system in Turkey,
  6. knows cost concet in health care, discuss the reasons of conducting economic evaluation in health care,
  7. tell and interpret the importance of rational decision making in health care interventions, know and interpret main economic evaluation techniques in health care.
Course ContentIntroduction to economics, basic concepts and definitions, introduction health economics, importance of this discipline in health care and basic concepts and definitions, study areas of health economics, factors affecting health status, inequalities in health, and some measures, equity and equality issues in health care, technical and allocative efficiency,
meaning of health; valuing health: objective and subjective measurement; reasons of cost increase in health care; characteristics of health care demand and supply, how service utilization is effected?, main characteristics of health care market; sources and types of health financing, examples from various countries and from Turkey in health finance;
health systems, examples from Turkey and other countries, importance and role of economic evaluation in health care decision making, economic analysis techniques in health care; examples.
