Course objectiveThe aim of this course is to teach the students the philosophical aspects of language and thought relationship, the different reality constructions, and their effective ways of language use.
Learning outcomes
  1. At the end of the semester the students will be able to;
  2. review the relation between language and thought taking into consideration the philosophical, neurolinguistic and social factors,
  3. explain how social realities are constructed,
  4. discuss the various patterns of thought and reasoning which hinder the construction of critical thinking
  5. evaluate the necessity of a sociocultural approach to mind in understanding the relation between language and thought
Course ContentBased on the philosophical, neurolinguistic and social aspects of the language relation, the course investigates how different social realities are constructed, how these realities determine various patterns of thought and reasoning, in what ways these constructions cause obstacles to critical thinking, and how they are reflected in individual and group-specific language use. A sociocultural approach to mind is combined with the mediated action role of language.
