Course objectiveThe aim of this course is to study fundamental concepts and principles in various fields of linguistics which have to be taken into account regarding the analysis of language phenomena. 
Learning outcomes
  1. At the end of the semester the students will:
  2. Recognize the theories concerning the structure of language and its functions,
  3. Identify the phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic levels in language,
  4. Recognize typological and genetic classifications of language,
  5. Solve the problems of phonology, morphology and syntax,
  6. Compare structuralist and generativist approaches to linguistics,
  7. Analyze the social aspect of language.
Course ContentThe course covers a variety of issues: Language structure and functions at phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic levels: structuralist and generative interpretations; the encoding of information structure and pragmatic categories; human languages categorised on the basis of typological and genealogical criteria; language use and semantic interpretation theories; language as an individual and social phenomenon; cognitive exploration of language.
