Course objectiveThis course is designed to shed light on the themes and debates specific to Turkish modernization through an analysis of a series of Turkish poetry, short stories and novels from the Tanzimat Era down to the present.  
Learning outcomes
  1. Learn how to use Turkish literary works as useful and important primary sources for social, political and historical inquiry in general and for an understanding of Turkish modernization, in particular.
  2. Through various literary texts, explore and analyze topics and discussions such asthe question of East versus West, Westernization, intellectuals, Islam, tradition, language, national identity, nationalism.
Course ContentThis course first provides a historical survey of the Turkish literature from the Tanzimat Era down to the present. The historical review is followed by a reading of the works by the following figures: Namık Kemal, Fatma Aliye, Ömer Seyfettin, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Halide Edip Adıvar, Nazım Hikmet, Peyami Safa, YaÅŸar Kemal and OÄŸuz Atay.
