Course objectiveThis course aims to explore the social, political and economic dynamics that have paved the way for the emergence of the contemporary Middle East from around the late 18th and early 19th centuries down to the present from within a historical and thematic framework.  
Learning outcomes
  1. By the end of this course, students are expected to have a historical perspective on political processes that shaped the modern Middle East. They will be exposed to Middle Eastern history, societies and politics by means of various academic research in the field of Middle Eastern Studies.
Course ContentThe following concepts, topics and processes are covered: orientalism and post-colonial criticism, the rise, expansion and development of Islamic civilization until the 18th century, the Tanzimat Era, Young Turks and Iranian constitutionalists, Arab-Israeli conflict, the Age of Nasser in the Middle East, the Iranian Revolution, the Palestinian Uprising and the Gulf War of 1991, the American Occupation of Iraq, the Green Movement in Iran and the Arab Spring.
