Course objectiveThe aim of the course is to enable the student to gain the knowledge, skill and competence in understanding the relationship between language, culture and society in post-war Britain, with special emphasis on dialects, accents, social life, ethnicity, race, gender and class. 
Learning outcomes
  1. acquires a broad and in-depth familiarity with the idea of "language", "culture" and "society" in post-war Britain with social emphasis on dialects, accents, social life, ethnicity, race, gender and class.
  2. develops their critical skills and uses them efficiently.
  3. recognises and analyses the key concepts in the representative texts.
  4. observes and analyses the key terms within contemporary Britain.
Course ContentIn this course, making meaning, representing things, key concepts such as culture, popular culture, social classes, language, gender; language and representative theories, mimetic theories of representation, contemporary British society, Post-war British society, multi-ethnic society, changes in family life, Irish, Scottish and Welsh question are introduced and discussed.
