D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Geomatics (Geodesy and Geoinformatics) Engineering is a profession whose goals of interest are collection, storage, process, analyses, model, display and presentation of spatial data in digital environment. Spatial data is needed by wide variety of applications from civil engineering (surveys), architecture, city planning, artificial intellegence (find route via robotic systems) to medical (display of genome databases).

Geomatics Engineering is one of the engineering discipline with strategic importance. Although recent developments in Information and Space Technology around the world cause Geomatics Engineering significance to increase, unfortunatelly Turkey has unsufficient number of engineers who can fulfill requirements of country with high technological education. Therefore, the aim of the Geomatics Engineering program is graduate engineers with high technological education in areas of Space Geodesy, Digital Photogrammetry, Digital Image Processing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems – GNSS, Geographic/City/Land Information Systems, Engineering Measurements, Laser Scanning Technology, Cadastre, Land Administration, Public Improvement, Digital Mapping and Disaster monitoring and Information Systems.

Proposed program offers to its graduates:

  • Fundamental information about Geomatics Engineering,
  • Higher technological methods and related information with Space Geodesy, Digital Photogrammetry, Digital Image Processing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems – GNSS, Geographic/City/Land Information Systems, Engineering Measurements, Laser Scanning Technology, Cadastre, Land Administration, Public Improvement, Digital Mapping and Disaster monitoring and Information Systems.
  • Basic concepts of collection geographical data, processing, analysis, management and presentation and
  • Determination of prominent factors during GIS and Spatial Database System design, improvement steps and finding analytical solutions to problems by using these systems.

Geomatics Engineering department was founded in 1995 under Hacettepe University - Faculty of Engineering with a name of Geodesy and Photogrammetry. The name of Geodesy and Photogrammetry was changed to Geomatics Engineering in 18 April 2012 with regulation of Institution of Higher Education in Turkey. Although undergraduate degree program has not started to education yet, Geomatics Engineering graduate program in Master Science level has been accepting students since spring term of 2011-2012. Graduate program was prepared in the lights of recent developments in Geomatics Engineering around the world. On the contrary of other Geomatics Engineering program in Turkey, Hacettepe University - Geomatics Engineering program differs with stronger Information Technology (IT) reference and by using related applications much more effective. There are two computer laboratories (one for undergraduate and one for graduate students). In addition, Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Geodesy and Surveying and Geographic Information System laboratories are planning to be established in the near future. Teaching language in Geomatics Engineering undergraduate program is %100 Turkish. But with the proposal of the board of the institute and approval of Senate, some courses might be given in a foreign language. Thesis works and reports of thesis must be written in Turkish. On the other hand, with recommendation of relevant academic institute and with approval of the Institute, thesis works and reports can also be written in foreign language. All regulations and principals of Graduate Education in Hacettepe University are defined with “Examination Regulation of Hacettepe University Associate and Graduate Education guide”.
