D.1. General Information about Program

The main aim of the program is to relate the modern linguistics methods and approaches to the studies carried out in our country, and to emphasize the importance of having a scientific viewpoint towards the studies in Turkish and in English. Another aim of the program is to contribute to the first and second language acquisition studies by having theoretical and applied studies. The medium of the MA and PhD programs has been English since 1970/71 academic year, and new courses and programs are added in accordance with the scientific developments and social requirements.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

 1. Applicants are required to hold at least a Bachelor?s Degree or Master?s Degree in any science or humanities field.

2. The cumulative GPA (of Master?s Degree) is to be a minimum score of 3.00 or its equivalent out of a scale of 4.00.

3. A minimum of 70 points (any of the scalar, verbal, or equal-weight categories) in ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam), administered by ÖSYM (Turkish Assessment, Selection and Placement Center), or an equivalent score of 70 points in internationally accepted exams such as GRE or GMAT, which are also subject to Hacettepe University Senate equivalence standards.

4. Minimum of 90 in English in YDS (Foreign Language Exam), or internationally valid scores, which are subject to ÖSYM equivalence standards.

5. International students' applications are accepted in line within ?Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

6. Any exceptional case not stated above is to be administered in accordance with `Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulation?.

 

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

 The requirements to graduate from the program are:

1.            They should get 240 ECTS throughout the program

2.            The first 4 semesters involve courses and the following 4 semesters involve dissertation writing process. The student must be successful in the courses with 90 ECTS in the first three semesters and in the ?Preparatory Course for the Phd Proficiency Exam? in the fourth semester which is for 30 ECTS.

3.            In the following four semesters, the candidate must be successful in the dissertation writing process with 120 ECTS. 

4.            They should also accomplish other requirements stated in ?Hacettepe University, Graduate Studies Regulations?.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The main objective of this program is to develop researchers who can create authentic knowledge, carry out analysis and synthesis in studies within their own field and interdisciplinary fields, achieve authentic results, defend these results in various academic domains, use existing methods and/or develop new ones, think creatively and critically.

Our department raises academicians for the fields like linguistics, language teaching, language and literature.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The program consists of the courses period, preparation for the Phd proficiency exam period, and dissertation writing period. The courses period includes 23 courses, 1 of which is obligatory (intra-departmental - 15 ECTS) and 22 of which are elective (intra-departmental - 10 and 15 ECTS for each) (4.3% obligatory intra-departmental, 95.7% elective intra-departmental). The students do not have to take inter-departmental courses in order to graduate, but they can take any courses from any other departments as elective. The students pass onto the preparation for the Phd proficiency exam period with 30 ECTS having completing the 90 ECTS courses period. There is no compulsory internship in our department. The courses in our program are per semester and theoretical, there is no practical courses. There are no prerequisites for any of the courses. The student who completes the course semester successfully is expected to complete the thesis writing process with 120 ECTS successfully.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods applied for each course have been defined in Course Plan which is determined by related lecturers. In regard to exams and scoring, relevant agents of HU Graduate Academic and Exam Regulations are applied.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from our academic program, students should take 90 ECTS in the courses period and 30 ECTS in the period of preparation for the PhD proficiency exam and be successful in the dissertation writing period which worth 120 ECTS.
