D.1. General Information about Program

Back

The Radio, Television and Cinema Thesis Master's Program that is planned to be launched within the Department of Radio, Television and Cinema at Hacettepe University Faculty of Communication will provide a solid ground for the development of the field of radio, television and cinema, which has evolved within the higher education ecosystem as part of the information society in Turkey, with its well-established education structure. There are many reasons behind the need to review the contents produced within the field of radio, television and cinema especially in Turkey. The political, economic and cultural developments, all reflecting the modernization histories of countries, invite us to reconsider the field of media, and especially radio, television and cinema, bringing about a necessity for an innovative research agenda within the higher education ecosystem. Moreover, besides the fact that the field of radio, television and cinema constitutes a significant part of Turkey's modernization agenda, recent developments and transformations indicate the urgent need to reconsider the so-called aspect of the media. The field of radio, television and cinema is indeed a fundamental aspect of the country?s exportation with an employment rate of 16% (Eurostat, 2020: 14) within the culture economy employment ever since 2014 (Alankuş and Yanardağoğlu, 2016). Therefore, as a significant component of the creative culture industries which are based on individual creativity, skills, and competencies and have the potential to create wealth and employment opportunities through the production and use of intellectual property, the field of radio, television and cinema has paved the way for an ecosystem that requires reconsideration. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) accept creative industries as novel and significant tools in order to realize certain macro-economic objectives such as providing development and employment opportunities. There are also many significant developments worth mentioning besides these two factors. In the transformation of the information society, the relationship between the broadcast of radio, television and cinema and information technologies should indeed be considered as a call for the review of the field within the higher education ecosystem. That convergent technologies and more importantly the convergence culture, experienced widely by masses of Turkish people, have not been fully acknowledged within the Turkish higher education ecosystem and its components yet, and that relevant researches in the field are far from being sufficient point out a serious deficiency in this field in Turkey. While the changing face of broadcasting through information technologies has carried the traditional field of radio, television and cinema into a new era of video-on-demand and a new culture economy with its social, cultural, economic and political aspects, it becomes imperative to establish a new research area. In this context, graduate students of the Radio, Television and Cinema Thesis Master's Program can not only conduct scientific researches but also take charge in the development of culture policies regarding the field and help the changing broadcasting ecosystem in Turkey become a significant asset in the culture economy of the country as well.
