D.1. General Information about Program

M.A. in British Cultural Studies Programme of the Institute of Social Sciences is a 2-year master's degree programme. The medium of instruction is English.

The objective of the Programme is to train academicians in the field of British Cultural Studies as well as specialists to work in relevant ministeries and in the media.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

1. A BA degree in English Language and Literature or Comparative Literature with English medium. BA degrees from departments of American Culture and Literature, English Linguistics, English Translation and Interpretation, and English Language Teaching can also apply on the condition that they document English Language and Literature as their minor degree or the successful completion of undergraduate course work of 18 credits in English Language and Literature;

2. At least 90 out of 100 in the national YDS English proficiency exam, or an equivalent grade in other exams approved by the University,

3. Received 80 score of ALES at any qualification fields or international exams whose equivalence are approved by the University Senate,

4. An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00

5. International students must also meet the above requirements. International students' applications are accepted in line within “Hacettepe University Graduate Programme and Exam Regulation" in Official Gazette (29 November 2016, No:29900).

6. The applicants with a BA degree in a different field and/or university may be required to complete the academic preparatory programme of maximum 6 undergraduate courses (for two semesters).

7. The provisions which are not covered above will be implemented in accordance with the relevant provisions of Hacettepe University's Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students who successfully complete their studies receive an MA degree. It is required to satisfy the necessary conditions indicated in Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; complete 28 national credits (120 ECTS) of the departmental courses.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants are required to have completed their undergraduate studies with a B.A. degree or an equivalent programme approved by relevant authorities and institutions successfully.

Requirements for Horizontal Transfers and Inter-institutional Credit Transfers

For horizontal transfers to the M.A. programme and for inter-institutional credit transfers, the regulations of Council of Higher Education of Turkey, HU Associate Degree, Undergraduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations, and the criteria specified by the Senate of Hacettepe University apply. Requirements for Erasmus Academic Exchange Programme

After student's stay at the host university for Erasmus Student Mobility Programme is completed, s/he returns to the Department with a transcript indicating the courses and the grades received. These courses and grades are transferred to the grading system of Hacettepe University, considering the course equivalence table offered by the European Union Office. Upon approval by the Head of the Department, the course equivalence table is submitted to the Dean's Office. Following the approval by the Faculty Board, the documents are submitted to the Registrar's Office to be recorded. Procedures related to the student's return are thus completed.

The aim of the programme is to train graduates who have an in depth knowledge in the field of British Cultural Studies and who can conduct research in the field, and can produce scholarly work of international standards both in English and Turkish.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Although academic positions are their top priority, jobs for our graduates are available in fields that require cultural and literary knowledge, in the European Union departments, foreign relations departments of related ministries, tourism, banks, state and private sector, and the media. They can also work as translators, writers and/or editors.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

British Cultural Studies M.A. Programme is a 2 year programme. In order to graduate, students should complete departmental courses equivalent to 28 national credits (120 ECTS) in total.

All M.A. courses are one-semester courses, which may be offered any semester. There are no courses with pre-requisites in the M.A. programme.

The departmental M.A. courses are theoretical; however, through in-class activities and home assignments, the application of the knowledge acquired in the courses is intensively supported.

Assessment and evaluation methods applied in each course are defined in the “Assessment Methods” sections of the course information packets. The relevant articles of HU Graduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations apply.

In order to graduate from Hacettepe University British Cultural Studies M.A. Programme, students are required to comply with the Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; complete at least 28 national credits (120 ECTS) of the departmental courses.
