D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Child Development and Education was established in 1968 as the Department of Child Development and Education under the Home Economics Academy, Faculty of Health Sciences, Hacettepe University.

The Department of Child Development and Education's mission is to educate qualified and well-educated child development specialists who will;

• Assist the development of normal, disabled, and diseased children of 0-18 years old who are under protection or in danger;
• Create developmental evaluation materials,
• Provide counselling,
• Carry out research studies,
• Develop and carry out projects involving children, families, educators and the society; utilizing contemporary approaches, and put the results of the outcomes of these projects in the service of children and families from every walk of life in the society.

(The Department of Child Development and Education, a department of the Instıtute of Health Sciences, is currently offering two graduate programs: "Child Development and Education" and "Special Education".)

D.4. Provisions for Registration

For the program, candidates are required to have completed the undergraduate program in the Department of Child Development, Faculty of Healty Sciences, Hacettepe University; or another relevant graduate program about medical, health or educational sciences. Acceptance is under the authority of the department's committee.

To meet the application requirements of Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations and Institute of Health Sciences.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The students of Child Development and Education master program are required to get a graduate score of (minimum) 2.50 over 4.00 and also accomplish a thesis to graduate from the program.Candidates for the Child Development and Education graduate program who have passed required exams (ALES, language proficiency and the interview exam) are supposed to prepare a master thesis in addition to taking courses of totally 60 ECTS. Master Degree is awarded to students who have completed all the courses (120 ECTS). One credit corresponds to 30 hours of work.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is possible within the regulation of the Institute of Health Sciences as;

• Recognition of courses taken as a special student,
• Recognition of equivalence of courses taken form another graduate programme,
• Recognition of completed-courses' credits (during transition between programmes).

D.7. Goals and Objectives

“Child Development and Education” program includes lectures that aim to the child, family and society based developmental assessment and intervention. A child development and education specialist graduated from the program is responsible for the physical, mental, language and social assessment of children and adolescents and also for the preparation of interventional programs.

The aims of the programme are;

• To educate professional members who lead families, children, and educators with their contemporary and advanced education and level of knowledge, enhance and modernize themselves according to the society's changing and developing needs, are creative and who establish effective communication;
• To be one of the leading institutions in the field recognized nationally and internationally with its counselling, research, publications, and training services;
• To contribute to the formation of a society with qualified individuals appreciating their own culture as well as embellished with universal values;
• To raise professionals who have a scientific and objective point of view and the ability to work together with commitment, who are honest and transparent, creative, flexible, receptive for contemporary approaches, sensitive to social realities, idealistic, cooperative, aware of responsibilities of being a team-member, and tolerant.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates have the opportunity to work as child development specialists, project coordinators, managers of preschools, and academic personnel in universities. Various positions are also available in the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Social Services and Child Protection Agency, Prime Ministry Institution of Family Research, General Directorate of Special Education Guidance and Counselling Services, National Ministry of Education, Ministry of Family and Social Politics, UNICEF, ILO, and other private and public special education centres. Furthermore, they play important roles in preparing and managing TV programs, print and visual media geared towards children and youth as well as in producing and designing pedagogic toys.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Child Development and Education master's program includes vocational elective subjects about child development as well as compulsory courses. The required total credit (ECTS) to be taken in the program is 120 ECTS. Compulsory courses occupy 45% of the program while 55% of the courses are elective.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

During the program, students prepare a thesis (60 ECTS) in their field after completing their graduate courses (at least 60 ECTS). Those who are successful in the thesis exam are awarded a "Science Expertise" diploma in the ÇGE program.
