Ph.D. in British Cultural Studies Programme of the Institute of Social Sciences is a 4-year doctoral degree programme. The medium of instruction is English.
The objective of the Programme is to train academicians for the Departments of English Language and Literature who specialise in the field, and to train specialists in English Language and Literature who have an indepth knowledge in the field to be employed not only in relevant faculties but also in ministeries, the media and related state and private sectors.

1) at least 90 out of 100 in the national YDS English proficiency exam, or an equivalent grade in the other exams approved by the University,
2) an BA GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00
3) at least 80 in the national ALES exam or an equivalent score of 80 points in internationally accepted exams such as GRE or GMAT, which are also subject to Hacettepe University Senate equivalence standards.
4) MA degrees in the field of English Language and Literature or British Cultural Studies
5) if the applicants have an MA in social sciences or literature, it is expected of them to have taken a total 12 credit courses in English Language and Literature or British Cultural Studies.
6) The applicants with a BA and/or MA degree in a different field and/or university may be required to complete the academic preparatory programme of maximum 6 undergraduate courses (for two semesters).
The students who successfully complete their studies receive a PhD degree. It is required to satisfy the necessary conditions indicated in Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; complete 36 national credits (240 ECTS) of the departmental courses.
Applicants are required to have completed their graduate studies with an M.A. degree or an equivalent programme approved by relevant authorities and institutions successfully.
Requirements for Horizontal Transfers and Inter-institutional Credit Transfers
For horizontal transfers to the PhD programme and for inter-institutional credit transfers, the regulations of the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, HU Associate Degree, Graduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations, and the criteria specified by the Senate of Hacettepe University apply. Requirements for Erasmus Academic Exchange Programme
After student's stay at the host university for Erasmus Student Mobility Programme is completed, s/he returns to the Department with a transcript indicating the courses and the grades received. These courses and grades are transferred to the grading system of Hacettepe University, considering the course equivalence table offered by the European Union Office. Upon approval by the Head of the Department, the course equivalence table is submitted to the Dean's Office. Following the approval by the Faculty Board, the documents are submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences to be recorded. Procedures related to the student's return are thus completed.
The aim of the programme is to train MA graduates who have an in-depth knowledge in the field of British Cultural Studies and who can conduct research in the field, and can produce scholarly work of international standards both in English and Turkish.
In addition to academic jobs, graduates are also able to find jobs which require cultural and literary knowledge, such as those in tourism, ministries, banks, state and private media institutions. They can also work as translators, writers and/or editors. Besides to the positions in secondary schools and academic institutions, they may work at various state and private companies, and international offices and the European Union departments of the ministries.
British Cultural Studies PhD Programme consists of 4 academic years. In order to graduate, students are obliged to get departmental courses, which is equivalent to 36 national credits (240 ECTS) in total.
All doctoral courses are one-semester courses , and they may be offered any semesters. There are no courses with pre-requisites in graduate programme.
The departmental PhD courses are theoretical; however, through in-class activities and home assignments, the application of the knowledge acquired in the courses is intensively supported.
Assessment and evaluation methods applied in each course are defined in the “Assessment Methods” sections of the course information packets. The relevant articles of HU Graduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations apply.
In order to graduate from Hacettepe University British Cultural Studies PhD Programme, students are required to comply with the Hacettepe University Graduate Degree Academic Exam Regulations, article 43; complete at least 36 national credits (240 ECTS) of the departmental courses.
