INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

D.1. General Information about Program

The Department of Industrial Engineering at Hacettepe University was established in 2004 and is performing its activities in its own building, having 4 floors and an effective area of 900 m2. The undergraduate degree program has started during the 2007-2008 Academic Year. The medium of instruction of the undergraduate program is English. The first two years of the undergraduate program are mostly composed of basic science, engineering and social science courses, whereas compulsory and elective courses from Industrial Engineering field are mainly enrolled starting with the second year of the program. Applications of the courses are carried out in Simulation, Quality Engineering and Health Care Systems Engineering Laboratories. After the second and third years of the program, students complete their internships at leading national and international companies. During these internships, students practice applications of their theoretical knowledge acquired in the courses and become more familiar with the industrial engineering field. Students are further equipped for professional life through their experience obtained in their graduation projects, which are realized during the last year within the scope of "System Analysis and Design I-II" courses. Seminars are organized at the Department of Industrial Engineering on a regular basis to discuss the technological and scientific activities. Students have the chance to meet national and international expert speakers in these seminars. Undergraduate students also have the opportunity to participate in exchange programs at various universities in Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain and Poland in accordance with the bilateral agreements.

Back

Transfer of credits and course grades are approved by the Administration Board of Faculty of Engineering upon the suggestion of the department for the cases; when a student who has registered for the Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Program after studying at another national or international higher education institution or when a student attending the Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Program participates in an exchange program or attends a course in another national or international higher education institution.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Back

The objective of the Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Program is to have the students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities; to effectively utilize the scarce resources such as man, machine, material, energy, capital and time as well as to design, analyze, plan, monitor and improve all processes and systems. With the vision of being among the academic leaders in industrial engineering education, research and practice, a balance is achieved between the theoretical courses and practical aspects and a comprehensive in-field elective list has been offered for the industrial engineering specialty areas.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Back

The industrial engineering methodology and its applications are not limited to a specific sector or a field of activity. Therefore, industrial engineers can be employed in many small and large scale companies and enterprises of public and private sector in all industries. There is a quite wide occupational profile of the industrial engineers who are employed as decision makers at all levels and practitioners in the design, analysis, planning, monitoring and improvement of every process and system. Among the common employment areas are; production planning, quality management, project/program management, capacity and workforce planning, purchasing, logistics, cost and financial accounting, system analysis, business development, risk management, inventory control, supply chain management, enterprise resource planning, research and development, human resources and information technology.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Back

The Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Program consists of a total of 240 ECTS credits to be acquired in 8 semesters. It especially emphasizes the skills and competencies stated in the program outcomes. 179 ECTS credits are allocated to compulsory courses whereas 61 ECTS credits are for the technical and non-technical elective courses. ÜNİ101 - Introduction to University Life, which is a compulsory course as of 2013-2014 Academic year is out of the credits stated for compulsory courses.

TKD103, TKD104, AİT203, AİT204 and BEB650 common compulsory courses set by Higher Education Council, have a total of 10 ECTS credits and the remaining 169 ECTS credits are for the basic science, general engineering, economics and compulsory courses in the industrial engineering field. The science, general engineering and economics courses are provided during the first 4 semesters. The compulsory courses in the industrial engineering field can be enrolled starting from the first semester. Two compulsory internships of at least 20 workdays carried out according to the Hacettepe University's Department of Industrial Engineering Internship Directives are evaluated within the scope of EMÜ398 - Internship I and EMÜ498 - Internship II courses during the 5th and 7th semesters.

Out of 61 ECTS credits allocated to the in-field (technical) and out-of-field (non-technical) elective courses, 7 ECTS credits (at least 2 courses) have been reserved for non-technical electives to improve the general knowledge and to acquire the competencies in the program outcomes. The courses offered by Elective Courses Coordinator and the courses in the fields of foreign languages, social sciences and fine arts can be registered as a non-technical elective course. EMÜ473 - Technology Entrepreneurship is considered as a non-technical elective course for Industrial Engineering undergraduate students.

The technical elective courses for which 54 ECTS credits have been reserved in the undergraduate program are intended for the skills and competencies to be acquired in the Industrial Engineering specialty areas. These courses are provided starting with the 5th semester. 9 courses from “Technical Elective Course List” should be registered according to the prerequisites stated in Course Information Packages.
