D.1. General Information about Program

The Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History at Hacettepe University was established in 1983 by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and consisted of two main disciplines as ?Ataturk Principles? and ?History of Revolution?. Main motivation behind the establishment of the institute was to conduct research on the history of Turkish Revolution, educate researchers and academicians in the field and compose libraries and archives. 

The graduate courses of the institute focus on teaching the history of Turkish modernization, matters related to the republican history and the recent developments within Turkey and its surroundings. By means of its graduate course, the institute aims to provide an extensive education program for the prospective researchers/academicians, comparing the non-western modernization projects with a special focus on the Turkish National Struggle, Atatürk?s Era and the Turkish Revolution.

This program, thanks to the nature of history writing, mainly aims to contribute general decision making process of Turkey for its geographical and political sphere. It also provides an interdisciplinary and  comparative approach for the actual debates and discussions regarding Modern Turkish History.

Our institute offers graduate courses in Turkish. The institute is equipped with high standard software and hardware instruments for a better educational service.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

For the PhD program, the candidates must have a master degree regardless of any major. 20 percent of the average graduation points of master degree is taken into consideration. Applicants are interviewed in order to be evaluated in terms of their general knowledge on history and basic history writing theories.  The candidates must also hold a minimum 60 points ( 50 percent of which is taken into consideration for the general evaluation) for the Selection Examination for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies (ALES) biannually undertaken by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM), or must hold an equivalent point for the GRE and GMAT. Applicants must have 60 points from Foreign Language Proficiency Exam (YDS) or equivalent score from nationally or internationally recognized exams approved by OSYM.

International students applications are accepted in accordance with ?Hacettepe University Regulation for Application and Acceptance of International Students in Graduate Programs ? Senate decision numbered 2014-28 dated 15 January 2014.

The other terms will be implemented in accordance with Hacettepe University Graduate Study Education and Examination Regulation.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Graduate courses of our institute aims to:

  1. Investigate the leading themes of the Modern Turkish History such as Turkish National Struggle, Ataturk's Era and Turkish Revolution.
  2. Answer the actual debates not only concerning Turkey but also its surroundings and the whole world.
  3. Contribute to the collective memory of the society by sharing its scientific findings.
  4. Provide students with the skills for modern history writing and investigation on the Turkish modernization and history of Turkish Republic.
  5. Research modern Turkish history by interdisciplinary and comparative methods.

Students that graduate  from Master and Doctoral programs can continue their academic careers. Our students can be  employed  by  various sectors especially by one of the fields of humanities  and social sciences (history, philology, law, international relations, economics, management science, sociology, psychology, education, science and other areas of expertise).They can enroll in one of our institute?s  doctoral programs and still can continue to work in their respective industries.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Providing the entry requirements for doctoral programs; who have completed Master degree program of our institute can continue Doctoral program of our institute or other doctoral programs which accept the graduates of Master degree.

The rate of Doctoral program for fall seemester of compulsory courses to elective courses is 3/16 (19%). The rate of Doctoral program for spring seemester of compulsory courses to elective courses is 2/15 (14%).

If it is necessary or if student requests, student can take more courses (credit) than minumum credit in both programs. Still, if it is necessary or if student requests, student can choose (5%) courses from different faculties / departments of our university, in this way, the courses that taken can be used to complete the minumum credit. For graduation; in Master degree minimum of 120 ECTS; in Doctoral program minimum of 240 ECTS must be completed.

In Doctoral program, student can take the minimum credit that is required to take, by extending over the first 3 semesters at will. In this program, if the student passes competency exam, he/she starts the thesis from the 5. Semester.

All of the courses in the Master degree and Doctoral programs are semester (seasonal) courses.

Academic members of our institute can lecture (have a class) in our University of Elective Course Coordinator.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Evaluation and assessment methods for each course is defined in the the "Course Teaching Plan" which prepared by faculty members and took place on knowledge package. HU Associate, Bachelor's Degree Education and Examination Regulations relevant articles apply to the Examinations and Course success grades.

According to the existing regulations; grading system based on , the student's score on course's exams and evaluations equivalent to exams and their conversion of the notes and the coefficients. the same system applied for Undergraduate and graduate education but the minimum grade for succsess is different for each program. In addition, the current grading system are not given qualitative labels to grades (outstanding, excellent, well, good, etc.)

D.16. Graduation Requirements

For the PhD program, the candidates must have a master degree regardless of any major. Applicants are interviewed in order to be evaluated in terms of their general knowledge on history and basic history writing theories. The interview/oral exam is assessed over 100 points and 30 percent of the score is taken into consideration for the overall elimination. Applicants must have a minimum 70 points at the oral exam. Additionally, 20 percent of the average graduation points of master degree is taken into consideration. The candidates must also hold a minimum 55 points ( 50 percent of which is taken into consideration for the general evaluation) for the Selection Examination for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies (ALES) biannually undertaken by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM), or must hold an equivalent point for the GRE and GMAT. Applicants must have one of the following scores for the language proficiency: KPDS - 70, TOEFL - 197, TOEFL IBT - 74, IELTS - 6.0, CPE-B, ÃœDS - 70.

*For foreign nationalities, candidates must hold a minimum 60 points at the Exam of Turkish Language Proficiency undertaken by Turkish and Foreign Languages Research and Application Center (TÖMER).
