“Department of Child Development” was established at 1968 by the name of “Department of Child Development and Education” as a department of School of Home Economics which is part of Faculty of Health Sciences at Hacettepe University. Since 1976, special education studies have been started and Special Education Department was established. "Child Development and Education Department", continued its efforts as "Department of Child Development and Education" and "Special Education Department" in two areas. Child Development and Education Department, is in Turkey in their field "first" and in the field of Special Education Department of the "third" main discipline. The name of the Department of Child Development and Education was in 1987, "Children's Health and Education", in 1996, the name become "Child Development and Education". The Department since 2007 restructured as "Department of Child Development under the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The mission of the Department of Child Development is to graduate Child Developmentalists providing services to the children, families, educators and the communities with its theoretical and practical education programs for supporting all of the developmental areas (mental, language, motor, self-help, socio-emotional) of different groups of children between 0 to 18 years of age such as normally developing children, children with special needs, children with the need of protection (institutionalized, working, immigrant and delinquent children) and hospitalized children.
Undergraduate program's of the department of child development was renewed in line with the Bologna process within the scope of this mission. By creating a new program, conducted a needs analysis based on the opinions of graduates and students, stakeholders, non-governmental organizations. Taking into account needs analysis, was established the qualifications of program, and renewed the program.

Child Development Undergraduate Program take their students to provide vocational education and training from high school and vocational high schools with her Undergraduate Placement Exam scores. The language of instruction is Turkish. English preparatory class is optional.
The undergraduate degree is given to the students who have successfully completed all the courses available in the undergraduate program, at least on a 4.00, grade point average of 2.0.
Recognition of previous formal learning vertical, horizontal, and transitions within the university is performed by the Board of Higher Education in Institutions of Higher Education in Turkey. Program's education plans exemption exam for English and Computer courses at beginning in the academic year. The students who provide the expected competencies of these courses have the right to take examinations. Students who take the exam and pass the courses in the curriculum are exempt from the related courses.
The scope of the Department of Child Development is educate a child developmentalists who are capable of diagnosis and assessment, family counseling, to prepare and implement developmental support programs for the children and adolescents with special needs, acute and chronic disorders, developmental needs of protection and at risk for the 0-18 age group, to use technological, scientific methods and techniques and which uses an eclectic approach to child development and ethical values ??adopted are intended to educate.
The main objective of child development experts is to support children's development at the age group of 0-18 including normal developing children, children with special needs, acute and chronic disease and children at-risk. Child Development experts develop assessment tools to assess children's development; provide guidance to the needs of related individuals, organizations and institutions; provide publishing and research services. Using contemporary approaches develop projects related to children, families, educators and the community and plans and implement projects to be the best interests of children and families in every segment of society. Child development experts tasks are reported in health, social areas and in other sectors below. Child development experts and Child Development Professionals working in hospitals and Family Health Centers are responsible for evaluating and developing the services in primary health care services related to child development, planning, making programs and producing projects and implementing them, and creating opportunities for internal and external co-operation activities in collaboration with the person concerned and the branch. The graduates are assigned to health facilities by the KPSS test with choose according to their score. In the social areas, child developmentalists and Child development Specialists can work in the Child and Youth Centres, Protection, Care and Rehabilitation Centers, Love Houses, Community Centers, General Directorate of the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, and Family Counseling Centers. Child Developmentalists who working in certain organizations are responsible for determination of the levels of development of children and monitoring their development. They make vocational studies for the solution of the problems; using professional techniques and methods prepares programs for pre-school children and adolescents and for children with special needs, implement the programs and take part in the preparation of the necessary material. Child development experts and Child Development Professionals monitor the child in order to ensure alignment with the center of the child and make the case presentation during their vocational working process. A Child Developmentalists assigned at the social service center and conducts studies on the adoption and adaptation of children is responsible for implementation and evaluation of development programs for children's emotional, cognitive and social development.
Child Development Professionals who can take part in Police, Child Department / Office Headquarters conduct studies to determine the physical, spiritual and social problems arising from or out of control of their conditions of children and their families or the environment. To improve the condition of the child's family and the school, in cooperation with organizations such as social and health services, the child developmantalists is responsible for investigation of the physical, psychological, and sociological factors of children who pushed to crime, development of plans and programs designed to eliminate criminality of children, children who are in need of protection, subject to neglect and abuse, children who fleeing from home or institution or organization, children living on the streets and working on the streets, children who are addicted to drugs.

Child Development Program includes compulsory courses related to the profession of Child Development. In addition to the compulsory courses the curriculum offered students the chance to choose elective courses according to their preferences. In the child development program students should take 180 ECTS of compulsory courses. The elective courses in the program are total of 60 ECTS. Therefore, the child development program consists 75% of the compulsory courses and 25% of the elective courses. To graduate the Child Development Program undergraduate students should take 240 ECTS - 180 ECTS compulsory courses, 60 ECTS elective courses. In the program the 15% of elective courses (36 ECTS) is in the area in the area and the 10% (24 ECTS) of elective courses is in the elective course out off the area. The elective courses of the program can be taken during the 4 years, starting from the first year of each semester. 20 ECTS of elective courses in the area is open to students of all students in Hacettepe University.
The students of the Department of Child Development make their internships on child development in Hospitals, Family health centers and special education and rehabilitation centers, public and private organizations connected to the Ministry of Family and Social Policies, other institutions and organizations.
