D.1. General Information about Program

       Health care provided to adolescents must be specific to this age group. Adolescence is the period of transition from childhood to adulthood with biological, physiological, social and cognitive changes. Certain behavioral patterns and choices of lifestyle will affect the youths health status currently and in the future.

       These biological, physiological, social and cognitive changes are the cause of problems during adolescence. If these problems are not solved during adolescence they worsen and may become life long. The most common problems seen during adolescence are problems caused due to high-risk behavior such as unprotected sexual intercourse and unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, eating disorders, substance use, and accidents. To understand problems that commonly occur during adolescence it is important to understand the biological, social and environmental factors affecting the patient.

Landmark scientific advances of the past century contributed greatly to the growth of the field of adolescent medicine. The physical and hormonal changes that define puberty have been elucidated, as have major psychological, cognitive, and behavioral developments characterizing the transition from childhood to adulthood. Great strides have been made in the management of mental illnesses and chronic medical illness, eating disorders, substance use and in technological advancements in the field of gynecology, and in the development of birth control methods. All have had a dramatic impact on furthering the discipline of adolescent medicine. 

The aims of the adolescent medicine doctorate program; improving high quality health for all adolescents, by ensuring they receive age specific services, in a setting strictly designed to meet there needs. But also provide sub-specialty services for adolescents with more complex problems unique to the adolescent period. The prgram provides the dissemination of knowledge as the need for expertise and resources to train pediatric residents and medical students in this field continue. Also to increase the number of healthcare specialists that want to specialise in this area and increase academic research in the field.

The official language of the course is Turkish. Foreign students are also accepted to the program.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to graduate from the program, except for the Preparatory Course for the Proficiency Exam, at least seven courses, one seminar course, thesis proposal and thesis study, with a minimum of 21 national credits and not less than 90 ECTS, a minimum of 240 ECTS during their doctoral studies. must complete. Students who successfully complete their courses and have an academic average of at least 3.00 can take the doctoral qualifying exam. The student who is successful in the proficiency exam and whose thesis proposal is accepted prepares the doctoral thesis under the supervision of the thesis monitoring committee. He has to write his results in accordance with the institute thesis writing rules, present his thesis in front of the jury and defend it orally. For every stage of the program, the relevant rules set out in the Hacettepe University Postgraduate Education Regulation are valid.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

A student that graduates from the program should be knowledgeable about the adolescent period; should be able to give a presentation about the specialty; have the ability to lecture; have the ability to plan a study; form a relationship with their patients, be able to give an opinion at a scientific meeting, be able to answer questions when asked and follow current literature.

The student should be able to use the results gained from research and present them for acceptance to national or international journal. The student must have a top-level of knowledge concerning the area of research, follow current literature concerning the subject and add a new perspective to the current literature.

All graduates will be able to provide health care, education, research and mentor ship at universities, research and education hospitals and hospitals both of the ministry of health and private. The graduate will have the ability to collaborate on a national and international level (Projects, congresses, courses, research) to benefit the field of adolescent health.

Graduates will be able to continue their careers as academicians at universities.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

This doctorate program consists of 8 semesters. Program consists of at least 240 ECTS; at least 30 course ECTS credits in the each of the first 4 semesters and total 120 ECTS credits in the last 4 thesis semesters.

Students have to complete the must courses in the first two years (four semesters). The required credit is provided by elective courses. Students may also take courses from other programs not included in the Community Oral Health Programs in order to contribute to their areas of interest and thesis studies. A student who has completed at least 120 ECTS credits, can also take extra elective courses in accordance with the approval of his/her advisor.
