D.1. General Information about Program

The Division of English Language Teaching has been sustaining educational services since 1982. Apart from the undergraduate and graduate programs, the Division of English Language Teaching also offers a PhD program.

The aim of the program is to raise open-minded academicians who will serve at university level, internalize moral values and contribute to teaching English and training English teachers and who are equipped with essential knowledge, skill and attitude.

The PhD program of which language instruction is English covers the domains of language, linguistics, culture, literature and mostly language teaching. Knowledge and skills are acqured on such topics as English language acquisition, applied linguistics, interaction between language and culture, literature, language skills, material development and adaptation for different level and age groups, testing and evaluation, lesson planning and especially English teachers training. Students do not only get knowledge but also conduct scientific work such as writing articles and dissertations, presenting at conferences and taking part in some projects.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Application conditions of PhD programs are determined according to Regulations of Hacettepe University Post-graduate Education and instructions of each division. Graduates of English Language Teaching or those having an equivalent diploma (English Language and Literature, English Linguistics, Translation-Interpreting) are accepted to the graduate program in English Language teaching. Those applying to the program are required to have at least %60 of undergraduate grade point average.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

To graduate from English Language teaching PhD program, students are required to take graduate courses of 24 credits, pass the comprehensive exam and defend their theses successfully in front of the jury members.

To have an undergraduate and/or masters diploma approved by the relevant division or Board of Institute Directors.

The graduates of English Language Department can work either in public or private universities as a researcher and academician.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

The graduate programme of English Language Teaching comprises of 11 courses and in total 240 ECTS credits. In every semester, the 40% of the curriculum is offered as elective courses.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Testing and evaluation methods implemented in the courses are defined in the “course instructional plan” which takes place in the information package. The relevant articles in the Examination Regulation of Hacettepe University Graduate Education are used for the exams and final grades.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

The PhD programme comprises of courses, comprehensive exam, thesis proposal, thesis study and thesis defence exam. Those accepted to the PhD program with a master's certificate have to take courses of at least 24 credits and those accepted with an undergraduate certificate have to take courses of at least 45 credits in total. According to the European Credit Transfer System those accepted with a master's certificate have to take courses of at least 120 credits and thesis study of 120 credits and those accepted with an undergraduate degree have to take courses of at least 180 credits and a thesis study of 120 credits. The duration to complete PhD education is for 8 semesters. Successful students have the right to take doctoral comprehensive exam. The exam comprises two parts such as interview and written exam. The successful ones in doctoral comprehensive exam defend their thesis proposals orally to the thesis approval committee. The students whose proposals have been accepted prepare their thesis studies in the supervision of the aforesaid committee. The ones who have finished their thesis studies take the thesis defence exam and if they succeed, they are honoured with PhD certificate of English Language Teaching.
