Along with other Nursing departments in our institution, Fundamentals of Nursing Department has been established according to the 27th November 1990 Executive decision of Turkish Higher Council. In 2 October 1998, it offered graduate programs, including master and PhD in Nursing, under the Health Sciences Institute of Hacettepe University. Â

Students must complete the 60 AKTS credits (21 national credits) compulsory and selective courses and 60 AKTS credits for thesis work in order to graduate.

Aims of this program are that the students develop a professional consciousness, acquire the ability to reach the relevant information specific to Fundamentals of nursing and to the basic concepts, theories, principles and methods of this subject, gain expertise in teaching fundamentals of nursing course by developing an educational philosophy regarding with the teaching of Fundamentals of nursing and acquiring the ability to use the teaching principles and methods.
We conducted a qualitative study using the interview technique to explore the views of ten graduates of Fundamentals of Nursing master's program. One of the graduates is working as research assistant in Fundamentals of Nursing department, and still continues on her PhD study. Four of our graduates are working as research assistant at nursing departments of various universities of our country, while two are employed as instructor, and three are working either as supervisor nurse or educator at hospitals.
All of our graduates reported that this master's program enabled them to develop a professional consciousness, and to acquire the information about the basic concepts, theories, principles and methods of Fundamentals of nursing, which regarded by them as essential for all fields of nursing. They expressed that this program provided them the ability to conceptualize the philosophy of nursing, to access, analyze and synthesis knowledge by literature review, and to develop the skill of using principles and methods of teaching for fundamentals of nursing course.

Nursing Fundamentals Master's program has 2 years (4 semesters) of education. The Principles of Nursing are carried out by the faculty members and staff of the Department. In the master's program, the rate of compulsory courses is 50%, and the rate of elective courses is 50%. In this program, the student can take more than the minimum credits if deemed necessary or requested. In the master's program, the student can take the minimum credit he has to take, by spreading the first 2 semesters as he wishes and starts his thesis work from the third semester. A minimum of 120 ECTS must be completed for graduation.
