D.1. General Information about Program

Department of Medical Biology was established in 1981 with the aim of teaching and conducting research on the intersecting subjects of life sciences and human health. The main area of research is genomics utilizing techniques of molecular cell biology and molecular genetics. The Department is situated in the Rectorate Building Block A and the infrastructure consists of cell culture laboratories, molecular biology and genetics laboratories, a genetic testing laboratory and a biological sample (DNA/Cell) Bank. The Department has 6 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 assistant professor and 5 research assistants.
The medium of Master of Science and Doctorate education programmes is Turkish. The Master of Science programme requires a minimum of two years of study. 120 ECTS credits (1 ECTS: 30 hours of work load) are required for graduation. During the first year, the required 21 credits (60 ECTS credits) are collected through must and elective courses in two semesters. The second year is devoted to thesis work (60 ECTS credits). To fullfill the doctorate degree, 240 ECTS credits (1 ECTS: 30 hours of work load) are required. A minimum of 24 credits (120 ECTS credits) are collected in four semesters that is followed by a proficiency exam. Successful candidates submit a thesis proposal and initiate their experimental work. Students are also introduced to various laboratory studies and techniques during their theoretical courses to improve their practical proficiency. Students are expected to participate in weekly journal clubs and lab meetings where the results of Department?s research projects are discussed. Invited lecturers? seminars and student seminars are also held periodically.
In the context of genomic sciences, the Department conducts research in identification of disease genes and the molecular fundamentals of genetic diseases by using ?omics? technologies and various in vitro and in vivo models. These are the most distinguishing properties of the program.

D.4. Provisions for Registration
Back- Graduates of Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Veterinary or Faculty of Pharmacy.
- Graduates of Faculty of Life Sciences, Graduates of Faculty of Science, Departments of Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics or Chemistry.
- Graduates of Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Biomedical Engineering.
- Other graduates of four years of higher education in the fields of Health Sciences may be admitted upon approval of the academic council of the Department.
- Certificate of language proficiency and ALES exam are required for acceptance by the Institute of Health Sciences (Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination*).

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations
BackThe education period is two years (4 semesters). Students are required to be successful in must/elective courses and seminar course during the first year. In the second year, they have to proceed with their thesis work and be successful in the thesis defence exam. 21 credits (120 ECTS credits) are required for graduation (Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination*).
D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning
BackFor acceptance of national or international students; previous courses, their contents, credits and equivalence to H.U. Medical Biology PhD programme must be evaluated and confirmed by the academic board (Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination*).
D.7. Goals and Objectives
BackTo educate students theoretically and in laboratory techniques within the concept of cell biology, molecular biology and molecular genetics.
Learning Objectives:
- To be able to access and interpret scientific infırmation in the fields of cell biology, molecular biology and molecular genetics.
- To gain skill in basic/ practical research.
- To gain skill in presenting research results orally and in written format.
- To gain qualification for employment in academic, private or public institutions.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples
BackMedical Biology, MSc graduates genarally continue their doctorate (PhD) education in national or international programmes, pursue their academic career and work in academic positions. Additionally they can work in public and private institutions as an expert, adviser or manager.

D.14. Profile of the Programme
Back`Principles of Basic Laboratory Techniques?, `Laboratory Biosafety?, `Laboratory Techniques in Medical Biology?, `Seminar? and `Special Subject (Thesis)? lectures in Medical Biology MSc Programme are must courses and compose 75% of the total 120 ECTS credits that are required for graduation. In addition, elective courses (technique and non-technique) compose 25% of the total 120 ECTS credits that is required for the graduation. They can be selected from other programmes within or outside the Institution. Prerequisites of Medical Biology MSc programme (student quota, required courses and ECTS credit etc.) are given in E.1.Course Information section.

D.16. Graduation Requirements
BackStudents should complete must/elective courses in the first year, complete and defence a thesis project succesfully in the second year. Students need to complete 24 credits (120 ECTS credits) for graduation (Hacettepe University Regulations on Graduate Education and Examination*).
