D.1. General Information about Program

As an academic program in Institute of Graduate Studies in Science, Department of Science and Mathematics for Secondary Education started the doctoral program in 2003. After organization of Institute of Educational Sciences, Science and Mathematics for Secondary Education Program transfered to this institute in 2013. In this program, according to Turkish National Education purposes, academicians and teachers who are well qualified in their fields and careers are educated. In addition, these educated graduates in this program, who also embrace the principles and revolutions of Atatürk, use the modern technologies in their careers.

Doctoral program consists of 120 ECTS credits taken from course term and 120 ECTS in term of thesis study. Graduates from Bachelor's and Master of Science program may apply the doctoral program if they satisfy the application and admission requirements of the program (ebe.hacettepe.edu.tr/ ). In doctoral program, taking at least 120 ECTS credits, students should accomplish the courses and they should successfully defense their thesis related to the field in front of a jury. All courses in the program are elective and students can take courses according to their interests.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The graduates who are accepted to the doctoral program with a master of science degree should successfully complete a 120 ECTS credit course load and a 120 credit thesis study, on the other hand, the graduates who are accepted to the doctoral program with a bachelor's degree should successfully complete a 180 ECTS credit course load and a 120 credit thesis study.

The total ECTS credit in doctoral program is 240. The first four semesters are the course semester and the second four semesters are the thesis semester. The first three semesters includes courses with 90 ECTS credits an 4th semester includes “Preparation for the Doctoral Proficiency Examination” course with a 30 ECTS credit. The students whose GPA are at least greater than 3.00 and complete all their courses successfully can take the doctoral proficiency examination. The students who pass this examination prepare a thesis under the control of their supervisors. For the other issues related to both thesis defense examination and program, Hacettepe University graduate programs and examination regulations are taken into consideration ( ebe.hacettepe.edu.tr/yonetmelikler.html ).

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

In addition to the graduate courses taken as a special student, courses which are taken last five years before registered to the institute from both in and outside the country may be transferred to the program with the opinion of the supervisor, advice of the program commission and the decision of the directorate of the institute. However,in transferring the graduate course credits of the students will not taken into consideration if this student took more than 2/3 credits of his/her enrolled programs total credits as a special student. D.7. Goals and Objectives

In the subject of secondary science and mathematics education, it is aimed to provide well qualified Ph.D. graduates who are able to

• have necessary and sufficient knowledge related to the field.
• do scientific research independently.
• analyze and evaluate the scientific findings and events in detail.
• have the competency to construct new syntheses in the field.
• provide solutions to social, scientific and ethical issues related to the field both in national and international platforms and
• accept that developing these solutions in these platforms is necessary.

  Except the seminar course, other all courses are elective, and the students may select courses related to their field of interest with the consent of their supervisors.

D.16. Graduation Requirements

In the process of their studies in Secondary Science and Mathematics Education doctoral program, The students who take at least 24 credits (120 ECTS) and complete them successfully, and defense their theses (120 ECTS) related to the field in front of a jury successfully, are awarded to have a doctoral diploma.
