D.1. General Information about Program

The graduate programs in the Department of Chemical Engineering started in 1967 under the Faculty of Postgraduate Education and is continuing within the Institute of Natural Sciences since 20.7.1982.

The quotas of the program, the documents required for the application, the dates of the exams and other conditions are conducted in accordance with the Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations

It is required to be graduated from chemical engineering departments or from the other departments of the faculty of engineering and chemistry department of faculty of science, with a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average (out of 4.0). Upon the suggestion of examination jury and opinion of the department head, scientific preparation program may be required for the candidates who has applied for the graduate program and considered successful, but completed the undergraduate education in a field other than the chemical engineering program. The scientific preparation program is conducted in accordance with the Hacettepe University's Graduate Education and Examination Regulations,which is arranged and run with the decision of administrative board of the institute

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The graduate program  consists of courses, thesis proposal, thesis work and dissertation defense exam in accordance with the Hacettepe University Graduate Education and Examination Regulations (http://www.fenbilimleri.hacettepe.edu.tr/26112016yonetmelik.pdf).

According to the European Credit Transfer System for graduation from the program, 60 credits of course work and 60 credits of thesis courses must be taken for a total of 120 ECTS and  at least 25% of the total ECTS (30 ECTS) must belong to the technical/nontechnical elective courses.   For graduation from the program, 23 national credits should be taken in addition to the special topics courses. Besides the four compulsory courses in the program including seminar, at least three of the technical/nontechnical elective courses must of KMU code.

D.7. Goals and Objectives

The aim is to train graduates who are aware of the novel and emerging applications of chemical engineering profession, able to access and evaluate information through scientific research, can design experimental-based research and envision systems that can produce innovative solutions, can present the results of their thesis study in a systematic manner in national and international environments, and are capable of transmitting the results to the benefit of the society, are capable of leading multi-disciplinary teams and concerned about ethical values in all professional, social and scientific activities.

Working areas for Chemical Engineers are generally listed as chemical and petrochemical industries, oil refineries, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, plastics, natural and synthetic fibers, food and beverages, cleaning products, fuel and energy, waste treatment, paper, automotive, electronics, paint, glass, ceramics, metal and coating, process control, medical instruments, artificial organs, technical sales, consulting, training and research, finance, public sector and universities. Alumni actively work in areas such as product and production management, research and development, process design and optimization, factory organization and management, quality assurance, safety and environmental quality, technical sales, service and marketing, management, occupational safety, quality, expertise and business security consulting services. The graduates work as well at the universities as academicians.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

As explained in the qualification requirements and regulations section, the program consists of compulsory and technical/nontecnical elective courses. 1 ECTS corresponds to 30 hours of student work load. All the students accepted to postgraduate program in chemical engineering must take the compulsory courses on Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Applied Mathematics in Chemical Engineering, Transfer Phenomena I and Postgraduate Seminar. Students are offered a wide spectrum of elective courses in chemical engineering such as Chemical Reaction Engineering, Mass and Heat Transfer, New Materials, Special Topics in Mass Transfer, Biotechnology, Polymer technology, Biochemical Engineering, Seperation Processes, Chemical Process Industries, etc. The elective courses are taken upon the thesis superviser's advice compatible with the thesis topic.Thesis subject can be envisioned on the basis to bring a solution to a problem encountered in industry as well as relying on the new technological advances, trends and innovative approaches. Thesis work can be experimental and computer-aided study.
