D.1. General Information about Program

Back

Physics Engineering Department of the Hacettepe University's Engineering Faculty has been active since the foundation of our university. In the beginning, the graduate programmes of Physics and Physics Engineering have been jointly maintained but in 1982, the Physics graduate programme has been canceled and the department's official name has been changed to “Department of Physics Engineering” in parallel to the programme's title.

The department offers undergrad level Physics Engineering programme and within the Hacettepe University's Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Physics Engineering Department maintains the graduate Physics Engineering programme (M.S. and Ph.D.).

Our department attaches specific importance to the graduate programmes since the day it has been founded. Many of our M.S. and/or Ph.D. alumni scientists have contributed to science through their research conducted in our university or in other universities. Starting from the master's degree, through elective courses in various expertise fields and efficient use of our department's laboratories, it is aimed to develop the skills related to scientific research to their full potential.

The programme language is Turkish; however, in order to be accepted, the candidate students should qualify in one of the English proficiency tests recognized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). As the reading materials such as books, articles, etc. necessary for this level are mainly available in English, therefore a high level comprehension is required.

D.4. Provisions for Registration

Back

The requirements (student quota, necessary documents, conditions concerning the entry exam & its date, etc.) for admission to the Master of Science degree in Physics Engineering are determined through the "Graduate Education and Examination Regulations" of Hacettepe University (in Turkish).

For those candidates, either holding a B.S. degree from physics engineering departments or from any other engineering program or science faculty's physics department, a minimum GPA of 2.5 / 4.0 is required.

The candidates coming from some other program than physics engineering, that are successfully accepted to the M.S. program may further be subject to a scientific preparation package in accordance with the 7th clause of the Graduate Education and Examination Regulations of Hacettepe University.

D.5. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Back

To obtain a master's degree from the Department of Physics Engineering, 120 ECTS program (60 ECTS being obtained from courses, 60 ECTS from thesis) should be successfully completed. A list of mandatory and elective courses can be found in D.8., and detailed information on graduation criteria is given in D.16.

D.6. Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning

The details on the acknowledgement of the courses previously taken from another institute, domestic or abroad, are given in the "Graduate Education and Examination Regulations" of Hacettepe University (in Turkish).

D.7. Goals and Objectives

Back

Our department, continuing its M.S. degree studies under the roof of Graduate School of Science and Engineering, aims to educate; implement specific skills and know-how for proficient engineers and scientists capable of working and conducting research in Physics and Physics related disciplines where high-tech applications are developed.

D.12. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Back

Those successfully completing the master's programme of Physics Engineering, can both participate in high-tech / R&D institutions or enterprises, government (such as TAEK, TÃœBÄ°TAK, DSÄ°, TSE) or private (such as ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, TAI, ROKETSAN) as engineers or researchers, as well as, enrolling to the Ph.D. programmes of research institutions worldwide to further pursue their academic careers.

D.14. Profile of the Programme

Back

Physics Engineering Department's M.S. programme consists of 4 semesters. Each semester contains a required 30 ECTS, totalling 120 ECTS, with 4 mandatory and 30 elective courses. The courses offered by the Department of Physics Engineering are semester based (i.e., spanning one semester only). Of the 120 ECTS, 84 ECTS are due to the mandatory (courses: 24 ECTS; special topics 60 ECTS) and 36 ECTS are due to the departmental elective courses (a minimum of 6 courses). 70% of the programme courses are mandatory while 30% are in elective status. Elective courses begin from the first semester.

Information on the prerequisites for each course offered by our department is included in the corresponding course information packages, prepared by the teaching staff of our department. (http://akts.hacettepe.edu.tr/?dil_kod=1)

Those students who intend to continue further to Ph.D., are advised to register to the elective M.S. courses of FIZ601 – Classical Mechanics and FIZ602 – Electromagnetic Theory, as they are prerequisites to mandatory Ph.D. courses.

D.15. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Back

Assessment and grading for each of the offered courses have been defined in the related information package prepared by our teaching staff. Examination and grading are conducted in accordance with the "Graduate Education and Examination Regulations" of Hacettepe University (in Turkish).

D.16. Graduation Requirements

Back

The requirements to obtain a master's degree from the Department of Physics Engineering are as follows:

- Successfully completing a minimum of 60 ECTS from at least 4 mandatory and 6 departmental elective courses.

- A GPA of at least 2.50/4.00.
